I have to agree!

Well said JJ, people can do what they want with their cars each to their own.

(But don’t put neon’s on a Yaris!)

Under body neons look good for show purposes...when you have pretty much modded everything else. to follow suit.... starting out with neons in my humble opinion just looks pap.

The wiring is faily easy...as said just locate the gromits in the engine bay/foot well...and thus bring the controler inside.

The under side of the yaris is pretty slick...it's hard to hide the neons...without locating them near the centre of the car..fornt and back easy enough...but the sides will be awkward. It's usually the sides that get damaged easily as well...with all the crud that gets thrown up. Could slip the neon inside some clear plastic conduit to protect....they do need to be firmly located though...or they will rattle...and break....drilling holes is really your only option for a job well done.

And i'm sure you know..but they are illegal for road use...be you moving or stood still...show use only.

Just out of interest... why they illegal for road use... I didnt think they were

you could get away with it if they were white.

any coloured light on a motor vehicle other than normal running lights / stop lights /indicators etc is illegal. Only the indicators may flash.

so coloured washer jets/ coloured headlights/sidelights are all illegal.

I'm sure this has to apply to under body neons as well...even if you hide the bulbs

The road traffic act regs seems to agree.

a few chavs round my area when they put there neons on the sides they drill 3 holes under the car 2 to put screw the neon on and 1 for the wire to go into the car but make sure you lift the carpet up first but if it was me i wouldnt do it at all bad idea

because only white light is allowed to travel from the front of the car and only red is allowed to travel from the back SEP for the indercaters

As far as I can see, it is a bit of a legal 'grey area' just been on Thames Valley Police website.... and their FAQ states the following about 'undercar lighting'

"We have also received queries on blue lights mounted under vehicles, with their light visible indirectly from a reflection on the road. A legal precedent has yet to be established, and we would advise any members of the public who are in doubt to seek their own legal advice on this particular type of light.

Members of the public should be aware that any lights that clearly contravene the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations may be treated accordingly by the police."

indeed...that's why I mentioned about the bulbs been hidden...if visible...totally illegal...if not visible..then you just see the "glow"

This however is considered to be a distraction...but how do you prove that..hence the grey area the police mention.

For example it could sitract the driver behind from seeing the brake lights.

I've not looked into neons...and you can imagine why :-) but i;m sure they will say for show use only on the packaging...like anyother coloured bulb`for a car...even internal ones ...agia nif the bulb is visible.

But.. how about the trucks...with all those lights in the back of the cab?? those little coloured neon map lights...which are visible form the outside...all illegal...but when was someone last pulled for it.......

one day it might be you...but it's not likely...but if your involved in an accident..and the other perosn says they were distracxted or whatever...and your road worthness of your car is taken into account...you'lld find your insurance company will say your pilicy is null and void.

sorry for putting the bad side accross... but peeps need to be aware...and make their own choice.

EDit...sorry for the typo's...tooo much wine tonight <hic>

sorry to jump in a little late here.. but JJ, i can't disagree more...

I mean, while yes, there are some very well finished modified cars around, and there are some cars that look great with undercar lighting..

There are more 'dogs dinners' on the road than ever, and this is down to people 'just doing what they fancy/can afford/saw on F&F' and while Im not saying there is anything wrong with that, people can also be misguided, and there is nothing wrong with trying to offer some guidance or opposing views. I would like to think, if i was suggesting doing something to my car that people on this forum thought was a really bad idea, they would have the decency to tell me..

So, while you can call it 'crushing their creativity', i see it more as providing valuble guidance.. and while they may not listen to me, as is their right, at least I have provided the advice I thought most appropriate..

And in this case, a small hatch that is 99% standard, with neons, will just be despised by most, and laughed at by the rest (IMHO)...

put them on they'll look the bomb!!.

TVOR...............Shut it.

And then take them off when they break... heh earpl??!!:lol: :D

In my opinion, they'll look crap, but that's because there are sooooo many scrotes/scally's/chav's around my area and i don't wan them flocking around my car to steal stuff.

If i had something like an RX-7 that was to be modded in that way, then it'd look better as it suits the car i think. (just reminded myself of Need for Speed Underground! - My MX-5 looks the biz on that... fully neoned!!)

At end of day... it's your car... and if you want 'em... get 'em... and good look with the fitting!

To be totally honest here guys....

Who gives a $hit!!!!

Its everyone's personal taste what they do with their cars.. just because -YOU- dont think it looks good... or dont like it... doesnt mean -THEY- feel the same....

When I see cars with the washer LEDs and LEDs in numberplates etc I do think 'Chav'...especially seeing as these are generally determined to be illegal..... ..... <snip rest of quote>

Thanks JD,

I do feel its really up to the owner of the car to decide what to do... although I do thank everyone who's posted for their opinions, as I always welcome advice.

I know some of you may think 'green on a silver yaris???' But, honestly, it does work! It does look a little alien like, but it does look good (thats if you like neons).

I'll take a picture later with the current green glow and show you all later. lol *awaits the slaughter*

Although my car is only low spec engine (because i'm only a poor-student and can't afford the insurance for a bigger one) its far from standard. The colour coded bumpers etc.... is the best bit I think.. my yaris bum looks the bomb!

Anyway Thanks for the replys! Piccies coming soon :-)

All very well n good Ian... but the original poster of this thread indicated clearly that they didnt want people's opinions on it... they wanted fitting instructions...

This was ignored.

So it wasnt a case of "providing valuble guidance" it was just once again everyone jumping on the 'lets have a go at the muppet' bandwagon, for the hell of it... Should the post been 'should I fit neonsto my Yaris?' then it wouldnt have mattered...

And as far as the whole 'distraction' thing... loads of ***** can distract a driver... neons are no different (distraction-wise) to a nodding dog... a fire on the side of the road... a driver gesticulating madly...some random stickers in the back window...

And if someone else hit you... its their insurance paying out anyways.. not yours :P

Not that I would put neons on my Yaris anyways :P

I find people who make their house GLOW during xmas is more distracting, specially when they live on the main road.... how can that be legal when 'in-car neons' are in the grey area of the law

btw, you can find the law here,

The Law

lol it states,

No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which is capable of showing any light to the rear, other than a red light, except-

(d)  light to illuminate the interior of a vehicle;

doesn't say what colour..... lol

It cannot be blue (well it can, but it really does attract cops attention and is very likely to result in a pulling over by the dibble) - Seen as an immitation of police and emergency vehicles, that ones for sure, only emergency doctors use green and the only red allowed as mentioned earlier can only emanate from the a$$ of your car unless you are some kind of fire marshall.

However, neons have earned themselves the prestigious Burberry Awards every year, and rightly so in my opinion (for road use anyway) having them fitted for shows (fitted properly and in resonably co-ordinated colours) is a different kettle of fish altogether!

Ultimatley, if you want your car to look like a UFO as your driving through your local town centre, fit the neons, but at least have the sense to hide the actual tubes on your chassis!

<End Rant>

Its because you can get them so cheap, neons can be brought on eBay for around £10, £20 in Halfords, even under cars for £50

For chavs these are some of the cheapest mods avaliable, hense why so many of them have them now

The cheaper and more acceable a mod is to chavs the more they wil have it

it took me about half an hour to read your message jaydon but i agree with what you said. i was thinking about putting some neons under my blue yaris, but i came up against a problem. No Money! :crybaby: and ive only had it 2 weeks so perhaps i should wait a while before offending most of the toyota owners club?! <_<

But if you re-read my post, you will see I was saying, sometimes people need advice whether they've asked for it or not..

This 'green-eyed' guy, obviously has been to a cruise and read one too many Max Power magazines, and is dissillsioned that neons 'look cool', and while there are probably a group of people that think that, there is also a [larger] group that think it marks you out as an idiot..

And while he didnt ask for that advice, at least now he is aware of the fact (not to mention the law thanks to another tangent discussion that he never asked about) that it isnt infact cool unless you are 17/18 and whack off to Max Power in your bedroom with your parents downstairs....

and thats the thing, just like the neon washer jets and burberry caps - no-one (other than a chav/max muppet) would in their right mind have them, unless they wanted to 'be a part of that scene init'

Dont even get me started on the whole 'they are illegal' thing....

If you just want to use this thread as somewhere to insult someone then fine... nothing I say will make a blind bit of difference *shrugs

My next car might hopefully end up having show neons.... and I dont personally give a rats **** what you think about that.
