I've recently put a performance air filter in my diesel and I can't believe the difference it's made ... the car flies, it picks up speed at the mere tweak of the throttle.

Any other derv tweaks out there?

None I know of. However, as mentioned in another thread, ditching the driver's floor mat which was obstructing the accelerator pedal made a big difference!

Yeah, my only one is the floor mat one.

Ditching the Goodyear GT2s is next on my list - after the winter tyres I had on their grip is abysmal. It does nothing but wheelspin if I leave a junction with even the slightest urgancy. makes me look like some kind of boy racer <_<

What make and model is the air filter?

You can get the motor chipped, but it costs about £500 and - as I've said before - I'm a !Removed! to my warranty :(

Its a fantastic - and underrated - wee car

very jealous, down here in australia we get no diesels at all, no diesel corollas, no avensis(only petrol verso) no diesel echo. we do get a 4 door echo sedan, 1.5 hback(sportivo) and base model 1.3l hatchback. on the plus side, no snow( well bugger all and only in the alps), no salt, bugger all rust. :D

Right there with you.

The U.S. is even more diesel-starved than Australia. At least you get diesel SUVs and Hilux. We only get the absurdly overpowered gas versions with 17 mpg.

I'd definitely have opted for a 1.4 D4-D if it had been offered in my car.

My last car was one of the very very few diesels we get here, a VW Jetta (Bora) Mk4 TDI and it was brilliant. Never short of breath or power and once I fitted a chip it was fantastic. Near 200 lbft of torque just off idle and a consistent 50 mpg. By comparison my xB's 30-35 mpg from a gasoline 1.5 liter seems thirsty honestly and now I've gone down to 105 lbft at 4000 something. :(

Still love my car, but it would be even better with a good turbodiesel under the hood instead of a high strung gasoline mill.

To answer the originial question though, I suggest you get your Yaris chipped. It is really amazing what chips do for turbo cars. If you think that fancy air filter made it come to life, you will be astounded by what a chip would do!

I don't know about the UK, but U.S. federal law makes it illegal for a car company to deny warranty coverage based on an aftermarket part alone. The burden of proof is on THEM to show that part caused the problem. Hopefully you have some similar consumer protection law there. Even if not, I personally would not worry. I have never heard of anyone blowing their engine up just because it was chipped. We aren't talking about tripling the boost pressure here, the mods are still well within the safety margin.

sorry to hear about the hilux, with a diesel its a very useful, economical ute(sorry, pickup) :D our warranty laws here are broadly the same, i have 45mm lower springs on my hatchback and it doesn't affect any other bit of the cars warranty. also any licensed garage can perform book services without affecting warranty. sorry bit off topic, but hell i wish we got the d4d motor. if i want more torque i will have to either supercharge what i've got or consider a transplant ;)

It was a Jetex one...

Slotted a Jetex air filter into my D-4D today, and I'm VERY impressed.

Bottom end torque has improved to mean 1st gear is almost redundant, on gear changes the torque and momentum seem to make it even smoother than before and when flooring it on motorway slip roads it just flies.

If there's any Brummies out there ... I've just gone up Rose Hill at the Lickey Hills in 5th gear!!

I get that wheel spin too, don't mean to do it (honest!) it just happens

TRD *does* make a rather pricey LSD for the Yaris transaxle.

I'd take a mechanical LSD over TRAC any day. Do you guys at least get TRAC as an option on the diesels? It's standard on VW diesels, as well it should be.

If I had the resources, I'd have a tweaked 1.4 D4-D in my xB with a TRD LSD underfoot!

Enough acronyms for you? LMAO...oops theres one more!

No worries, I just remembered b1ackb1rd's post.

As for these mod chips... aren't they easy to remove and put back for the purpose of warranties?

Some are, some are sottered in. In either case there is no way they can be detected unless someone deliberately looks for one and as I said, I'd look into the consumer protection laws in your country. Now we know that in America and Australia at least, laws are in place to protect you from a dealer trying to unfairly deny warranty coverage because of an aftermarket part.

So the answer is some are easy to remove, but I am more familiar with the chips for Volkswagen TDI's. I have no experience tinkering with Jap ECU's, but I know they are different than the Germans and I've heard the Japanese ECU's are a little harder to mod.

I still say go for it. Chipping my diesel was the best decision I ever made with that car, so much bang for the buck.

There is one available via the Jetex website for £421 which is unpluggable and can be turned on and off in-situ.

No specific details on what it can actually do though...

Sorely tempted by the Jetex filter, but I think I've spent enough on the car this month ;)
