True, but i bought a brand new 1.2 Corsa with One years free insurance

which mutliplyed to 3 years no claims after the first year was up. ;)

They'll insure you, but it will be sky high.

i tryed getting insured on my dads mazda 626 2.0 12v and they said it wouldnt even come up on computer so they couldnt insure me so i wasnt sure if i could get insured on the mr2 at all

I know of a 18yr Old Turbo driver, though his premium could be used as a deposit on a small house

if your not the named driver then it could be cheap, ie your dad insured first, then your mam, then you, or if your after the no claims then try it the other way round, my mam knocks 200 off my insurance but she hasnt driven for 20 years.

im just going to buy a honda civic 93 hatch back because i got a quote for 1k and try and get my mum to keep the mr2 for a year or two,

i dont no what BHP the mr2 is because i was told the modle i have comes in a 120bhp and a 140bhp do u no how i can tell the difference with out putting it on rolling road?

i never thought about that

Also, as a first car, bump up your excess and lower your mileage.

Do anything to get it cheaper .. and phone arround.

I'm having quotes from £850 to £1600 at the moment.

A 1992 MR2 will have a 154bhp engine.

UK Cars :

The Coupe (FE engine) was 121 bhp.

The GTi-16 (GE engine) started at 154bhp, went up to 174bhp for the later revision, and ended at 168bhp (due to different maps for emissions).

Exactly right. And i found elephant the cheapest. I think you'll get ins for under £2k on a car that age easily. You definitely will on the olds insurance.

Also, one thing about excess, i increased my excess by £200 and it knocked £200 off the premium. I would have to claim twice in order to lose out!! Max excess i say. Also, i put yearly mileage as 6000. Will u be driving to work. will the ins comp know if you do? social use only is cheaper! Do you park on the road overnight, garage or street? Its hard to lie about garage, but if it gets nicked and uv got a drive, they dont know if it was on the drive or in the street. drive makes it cheaper!

Let us know ur best quote!

I feel for you mate.

Age is definitely against you.

10 ways to get your insurance down:

1. Advanced driver qualification

2. Bonus accelerator scheme (insure for 10 months, but get 1 year NCB)*

3. Go on limited mileage... but don't exceed it.

4. Go third party (only if you can afford to lose your car)

5. Put your Mum as main driver, and you as a named driver

6. Insure it for Social use only... but don't be caught out going to work.

7. Have it parked in a garage overnight... or at least a driveway.

8. Get Tracker fitted

9. Thatcham Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser.

10. Get a decent looking car with small engine to build up your NCB and age, and then buy your motor when you're a few years older. Spend the time wisely to save up. It'll fly by.

* before commiting to a bonus accelerator scheme, make sure it will be valid with other companies.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

I cant believe that. Mine was £1100 for 12mths fully comp, 23 yrs old, first car so 0 no claims (but driven mothers on her ins for 5 yrs), one accident in last 3 years, social and commuting, driveway, £200 excess, mileage estimate 6000 (about right 4 me), insured for £8000. Full clean license though.

There must be someone who'll specialise in first car owners, young drivers. If not, just drive on the olds ins for a few years like i did. Dont worry about no claims, it dont make that much difference (see above). You'll probably hav an accident anyway and lose ur no claims within your first few years. sorry but look at the percentages! Even if its not ur fault. thats y premiums are so high for ur age group! However, i remember the insurance question being raised on mr2 drivers club when i was looking to get 1 and there were DEFINITELY 18 yr olds saying theyd been insured for under £2k.

As for pass plus mate, , insurers dont give a flying :censor: if uv got that. sorry, waste of money im afraid. Advanced driving test yes, pass plus, no.

Pass plus basically means youve minced down a motorway for a few miles and kept to the speed limit. It means that your brain can cope with the fact that there's an extra lane for overtaking compared to the dual carriageway.

Should however be mandatory for women :lol::lol:

Please dont reply to that ladies. jus kiddin

I don't want to appear as the club saddo here :( , and I'm saying this for your long-term benefit (you can probably tell by this point I have kids!!!!, but at 31 still have the 'need for speed' running through my veins :) ), but working deep within the insurance industry, I would suggest you think very carefully before relying on being a named driver on your parents insurance.

Should the worst happen - you crash the car - and the insurer finds out that although you've declared yourself to them as a named driver (i.e. not the primary/main user of the vehicle) you are actually the one using it the most, they would be entitled to void the policy without making a payment.

Effectively you have not declared a 'material fact' that they should be entitled to consider when appraising the 'risk' presented to them. It is also fraudulent! and most insurers are getting very wise & clever in clamping down on this.

You also won't be building up any No Claims Bonus (NCB) as long as you're a named driver.

Seriously consider running a cheap (i.e. low ins group car with no mods) for 1-3 years to get an established driving record and your own NCB before taking on the pride and joy which is that mr2 (or whatever gets you drooling by then).

Also, suggestions 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 & 9 by 'Jesus' should help a little.

In the meantime, enjoy some happy and safe motoring

How are the insurance company able to check that you are the predominent user of the veichle??? Surely there would be no way to prove it

G200, unfortunately I don't work on the claims side of insurance, but from my experiences within the industry, if there is the slightest hint from the details received about the claim e.g. time of accident, purpose of journey during which the loss occured etc. that suggests anything more than secondary use of the vehicle, they'll get claims investigators involved!

They are all taking matters relating to fraud very very seriously, this being only one part. They often seek to employ ex police officers to carry out the investigative work!

Better to be safe than sorry?
