Turbo On The Way Out

So, changed my oil at the weekend an noticed quite a bit of oil on the inside of my pipes leading to and from my intercooler, so stripped it all down, and cleaned them out.

Now they are filthy inside again

so i recon my oil seals must have gone / or be on there way out, so its time for new turbo ?!?!

so what you recon. turbo technics (right near me) say it will be about £250 for a rebuild and a new spindle, and seals etc.

or do you recon i should go for a bigger turbo (is it worth it)

or shall i just refurb the one ive got !?!?! ;)

cheers, any advice appreciated !!!

Fensport can supply a recon unit for £200, but I'd go for a stage one unit for the extra few quid.

It might not be your tubo mate, it might be oil coming from the crankhouse housing via the PCV hose that plugs into the intake just before the turbo. Do a compression check first to be sure before shelling out for a new turbo!

yeah i have concidered that. (Crank case PCV Hose)

but there seam to be quite a lot of oil. you can run your finger through it.

where do they do compresion tests on turbo's ? -how much ? do i need to take it off ?

im still running 1.0 bar no probs at the mo.

just dont want the seals to go completely, and have me car of the road, rather catch it if i can

Only £200 for a recon turbo? Seems very cheap, I thought they were usually around £600-£700.

...for a recon? For a new one maybe, but not for a recon unit.

Go to Fensport mate. Price for a stage 1 CT26 is around £5-600.

Thing is though he may not need a new turbo pretty much a waste of money

if the turbo is working fine and will last a good few years it could easily

be a leak from somewhere else or as someone else said needs a catch can.

You could end up getting a new turbo and the oil is still appearing

You can get a compression tester from Halfords for around £15 I think (I bought one last week from there)

If youre comfortable withtaking piping out and cleaning them then you can do the actual compression test yourself! All you have to do is:

- unplug kinglead from dizzy and tie it to somethign so it doesnt park to anything closeby

- unscrew 1 spark plug out and screw the compression tester in

- crank the engine for 2-3 seconds max (It wont start obviously cos theres no spark arriving at the remaining 3 plugs)

- The compression tester will show the max pressure produced in that cylinder chamber, record this

- repeat for the other cylinders

Note that its the difference between the readings and not the actual readings that matter, the readings should be within 15PSI of each other and generally all of them should be around 175PSI if healthy. If theres a big difference between the cylinders (>20PSI) then theres a leak somewhere - piston rings and/or headgasket

The one from Halfords has a pretty good explanation on the back too

Thanks for all your helps guys.

been offered a turbo of a supra (ct26)

he recons they have bigger compression wheels ? true ?!?!?!

the guy wants £250 for it from rogue systems! he says its in good nik! what u recon ??

might just get that, and a catch can, spend about £300, run a bit more boost, and cure me oil problem ? :D

do you recon its wort upgrading me turbo anyways ? <_<

what about getting a ct20 instead of a 26, rogure recon they spool up quicker, and hold boost longer ! he has them for £250 ish as well ?

i could proably get a few quid for mine on eBay if someone wants to refurb it
