Anyone any idea when the cam belt should be replaced on my paseo?

It's done 58 thousand miles... can't find a reciept for it being done though. It's had a full toyota service history up to about 40 thou.

Cheers,

Phil

60,000 miles is the standard service interval, so get it done soon.

if its had a full toyota history then it might have been done, look at the service book and see what they do at each service as there is an 'A' service and a 'B' service. The B ones mean more bits have been done. Think normally the B service around that stage is 50-60k. I think!

Oh and a word of warning, there has been a clamp down on huge sigs so i would advice you to shrink yours to about 100pixels or less to avoid having it removed to find this out! (had it happen to me)

You can tell if its been done by taking the cambelt cover off. If the belt looks new then your okay. if its gone a bit tatty. get it changed asap!!

and it is 62,000miles or 5 years according to my manual

whats 2000 miles between friends.

A timing belt is under tension at all times and rubber does perish, so this is why they advise changing every few years, even if the mileage interval hasn't been reached.

Rang up toyota and they said its usually every 5 years of 62,000 miles.

They quoted £174.70 for the cam belt and £219.37 for a full B service.

I paid £15 for the belt haven't had it fitted yet but had a quote for £60 is that reasonable?

£60 is a good price, better to let some1 who knows how to do it, do it, if u get it wrong either ur timing will be out and ur car could run like a pig or worse u could do some damage

I paid £15 for a Gates Cambelt. I believe they are supposed to be quite good. The one that was on it from the factory was a goodyear!

The timing on toyotas is fairly straightforward, if you get the pulley's lined up then its a doddle. the hardest bit is actually undoing the bolt that holds the pulley onto the crankshaft. thats real tight!

I can post instructions if needed.

have a nice day

you also need to be very careful with the pulley as its fragile aluminium. There is a special tool to push it off.

I made up special tools to do this on a Sera. Other people use a long prybar to prise the pulley off, and damage it.

Attached is some Sera instructions, but the procedure is the same.

Won't let me post the document. :cacker:

I didn't think you needed a special tool? the keyway is tapered and i just pulled with my hand and it came off!

Its a slight tapered keyway. Some are easy. Some are pigs to get off. But if they are difficult, its best to use the right method than the wong method.

On a Sera there are two holes plus the centre. You mount some studs in the two holes either side and then you can screw a bolt into the middle one to push against the crank and to push the pulley off the taper. This is the correct way of doing it.
