Engine Cuts Out!

I have had a problem with my GT4 on and off for the past 2 years. Engine cuts out while driving. It will sometimes starts and maybe go a few miles, even a few months untill it cuts out again. Had it looked at by Mr T who fitted new dist cap and rotor arm. Made no difference. Ecu, ignition module all check out ok. Code 12 or 14 came up (not sure now which one) but was told it was ignition problem. Have also been told could be the immobiliser. Think it maybe an aftermarket alarm but looks like its fitted really well as all the wires seem to go into original loom. Would like to try to disconnect immobiliser as dont know what else to do!. Car sits in garage as cannot trust it to go anywhere. Can anybody help me please, many thanks, Steve.

call an auto electrician who will take the immobiliser out for you.sounds like its wired to the fuel pump and not the ignition system.so look to the fuel side of things with the wiring.

what boost you pushing and what are the mods, ignition isnt just electrical, its also at the heart of the work being done under the hood, correct ignition of charge is paramount above all else.

so let me know more fella.

Thanks for reply. Am at present in touch with electrician to remove immobiliser. If it was fuel prob would it not splutter before spopping as this just stops dead. May be a while before I know if the above cures it as it run for a whole year between breaking down then before christmas cut out three times in a week. not used it since.

error code listings for you mate, check the error code for yourself, then re-set the ECU take it out for a hard spin then check for error codes again, then report back :D

Thanks for reply. Have reset ecu and checked error codes myself . Was few weeks ago now and sure it was 12 or 14. Whichever one it was I checked code online and it came up ignition fault. Problem is all codes are clear so cannot get a reading untill it cuts out again. Dare'nt drive far cos have to get towed back when it breaks down. ( not the easiest car to tow)

how do you get it going again, after you are towed back?

Do you just wait a set amount of time ie 10 mins or 30 mins??

If so it would probably be the Imobiliser

If you have to just reset the ECU to get going again, can't you do that wherever you are??

If you can post more info I'm sure the guys (and girls) here will help you out and get it sorted

Hi, thanks, sometimes it start straight up, sometimes after a few minutes if not have to tow it home. Have not tried reseting ecu when it stop cos only told how to reset the last time it broke down. needed to clear codes which at the moment are all clear. Hopefully getting immobiliser disconnected soon and yes if it cuts out again will try reseting see what happens,

You could also try disconnecting the Battery and locking and unlocking the doors to try and reset the immobiliser if it is that.

Does it only do it when you are actually driving?? ie could you just sit with it running on the drive. You did say it hadn't happened for nearly a year but is it more frequent now??

Also if it only happens once a year (or not very frequently) you could sell it and buy another???

lol I know what you mean!

I was once told that 2nd hand cars will always have a fault with them as people only change their cars when there is soething wrong with it

I don't quite agree as my parents sell their cars when they get bored of them, but I do always seem to get atleast one problem with every 2nd hand car i've had :crybaby:

it happens when driving and when sitting still. Dont want to sell it and would not sell it without telling of any faults.

some immobilisers like mine for instance are built into the fuel pump and the ignition system.so if it is the problem its 1 of the 2. so it may not splutter first, its possible it will just die.
