Mpg Tested Now

Ok so it must be about 4 or 5 weeks now since I filled my tank so I could see what sort of mpg my car was getting.

As my avatar shows it is a 1.8ST,

as I have posted before 90% of my driving is going to work and back, I have a 5 mile journey to do and it takes me 25-30mins on average. So that's an average of about 10 miles an hour, but with a range of 0-80mph (get about 1/2 mile on dual carriageway when i get to put my right foot down!!)

I only have to fill the celica up every month or so, so it feels like it's doing loads of miles to the gallon.

Anyway it worked out to be an average of 33.2MPG which I thought was quite good really for the type of journey I do!

Just out of interest does anybody know how many litres of fuel the Celica holds?? I thought I was pretty low on fuel (I was getting worried anyway!) but when I filled it right to the top I only got 52 litres in it - I thought they had a 60 litre tank??

Taken from the TOC!, gen 6 Facts & Figures....

"Gen 6 ,1.8 and 2.0GT, UK fuel tank capacity.....60 litres or 13.2 Gallons

GT4 ST205.....68 Litres or 15.0 Gallons"

When i had my Gen 6 1.8SR, that would return 30 plus mpg on a regular basis :) .

I must have had a bit spare then! I had been driving with the light on constantly for 3 days! But according to that I had about another 2 gallons left

The car starts to act a bit strange though when the fuel warning light is on. It takes slightly longer to start the car (It normally starts straight away). It also began to idle slightly strangely yesterday - that's why I started to worry. As soon as I filled up it went back to normal!

My previous car was a 306 dturbo, that had a 60 litre tank in it and I often filled it up with around 63 litres - Never could decide if the petrol company was ripping me off, or if there was a lot of space in the filler pipe! - and no it wasn't leaking out!!!

I get about 30 - 33 mpg out of my GT. I'd say that's about 70% dual carriageway @ 60 - 80, ~20 mile runs but heavy traffic so never really get the chance to cruise properly and 30% slogging round the busy streets of london @ 0 - 2 mph :).

I must say I thought the ST was much much better on fuel than the GT so either I'm quite pleased with the comparison.

This is all bad conditions for the ST though - So this should be the worst possible MPG

I leave my house, drive to the end of the road and join in the traffic queue, I then sit in the traffic queue and drive very slowly for 4 miles with a lot of sitting still. I then drive onto a dual carriageway and take this opportunity to put my foot down (I never properly get onto the dual carriageway, I stay on the slip road - as it joins to the exit) I then finish the journey at about 30mph up to my work.

So for the first 4 miles I spend most of the time sitting still. When I first got the car I drove up to Scotland and did lots of miles around scotland and it was returning around 550 miles to a tank (well until the light came on) Which works out at around 45mpg+ and that wasn't all motorway driving some of that was crappy single lanes in the middle of nowhere and some was city driving like going through Glasgow.

Your right, they use lots more fuel when warming up. I used to drive 2 miles across town to work and back every day (lazy, I know). Combined with the occasional motorway journey, I only needed to fill up every 3 weeks or so. But I never got more than 20 mpg (usually 17-18 mpg) from my GT (gen 5).

Now, 95% of my driving is motorway work, cruising gently at 75-80 mph. I am doing well to get >30 mpg. At the moment half of my commute is in 40 mph roadworks, and the traffic always flows smoothly. My mpg has gone up to 31.5!

So, 30 mpg from your car and journey combination is pretty reasonable.

yeah I thought it was quite good. I was getting about the same from my diesel car that I had before, because the journeys were too short and I had to keep stopping and starting

Given the type of driving that is quite impresive. The 45 you were getting on runs is also, I think on a long run I get about 35/6.

but you get there quicker

Yep, almost before I've left.

Honestly though I've been in an ST and though the GT is much more fun in terms of acceleration around town, on the motor ways you don't usually need that, it's not that often you need all that power to overtake someone, I think the ST really shines here. Surely the sensible option any way. I thought about an ST when getting mine but in the end couldn't resist the lure of ~170 bhp. :D

since mines been chipped i hate to think my mpg now but shes fun so its all worth it

whats this chip you've installed then?

it shouldn't make it any worse mpg if its a good one

its a superchips icon and as it adds more power by adjusting the ignition it uses more fuel one of the joys of making ur car more powerful

your car is UK spec?

all that does is advance the ignition so your car will NEED super unleaded now and will be similar to the jap model

although i guess it will put a bit more of a curve on the ignition curve to reduce knocking in the lower revs.

its lowered the power band to 3k instaed of 4.5 k and added 8bhp the car is now running over 200bhp (all mods arnt getting properly unvailed till jae)which means poorer fuel economy

Id like to work out roughly what my mpg is....

How is the best way to get a fairly accurate idea? I was thinking of waiting till the petrol light came on then filling it to the top and resetting the miles and findling what mileage i get till the light comes on again...but im not sure if when the petrol light comes on is accurate???
