It's easy! Fill the car to the brim and rest the trip. Drive round for a few days then fill it to the brim again. Check how much it takes and how many miles you've done on that amount of fuel. Then you have an accurate usage measurement which you can easily convert to mpg.

yep that's the way I did it

Only inaccuracy is how much you fill it. It's not 100% correct because you may hold the filler slightly different the second time and fill it slightly further.

It's got to be the most accurate way though.

you could just fill it up, run it down and when you fill it up again ask for a reciept, it has the amount in litres on it, take note of the miles that you've covered and do the maths

Your right, they use lots more fuel when warming up. I used to drive 2 miles across town to work and back every day (lazy, I know). Combined with the occasional motorway journey, I only needed to fill up every 3 weeks or so. But I never got more than 20 mpg (usually 17-18 mpg) from my GT (gen 5).

Ditto... i used to go even less than that!.. bout a mile and a half to work.. and £10 would get me roughly about 55miles..

My cousin who also used to own a 5th gen could not figure it out as my car was in mint condition with FSH...

Its funny cos now with my MR2 Turbo.. i get roughly the same MPG with driving off boost... as my old 5th gen... well.. never manage to restrain myself completly but then hey... why did i buy a turbo? it sure wasnt cos of the Mpg!!! :D
