Changing A Bulb

I noticed that one of my indicator bulbs has stopped working the other day...(well actually about two weeks ago) and so, finally sick to death of the left indicator beating triple time whenever I signalled, I decided to change the bulb last night.

On every car that I've owned before this has been pretty straightforward, so I wasn't expecting to use any tools, nor was I thinking that it'd take me more than 2 minutes.

So I opened up the boot, and looked around, and then looked about outside, and then looked about inside for a bit longer, and then took some plastic panelling out of the boot, and then unclipped some more plastic, and then undid the interior light wiring, and then took the parcel shelf off, and then took out the plastic side pannelling, and then looked around for a bit longer and then thought sod it, I need a spanner. So went indoors and had a cup of tea instead!

Do I really have to take the whole bloomin' light off just to replace the indicator bulb? Or am I being thick? What a palaver!

If this is what it's like just to change a bulb what is major work on one of these things like???

Sorry forgot to say, 1990 2.0 GTi - Gen 5. Haven't got any sort of manual or handbook for the car but didn't think I'd need one!

I'm not asking for help in how to do it - more just expressing my surprise at the relative difficulty of such a routine task! (Unless of course I'm doing it all wrong and making it more difficult than it is.)

there's four or five round plastic plugs on the boot liner, remove these ,use a 10 mm socket and take the 5 nuts from the studs, remove rear light ,replace bulb.refit the lens.

10 minute job easy .

As opposed to the procedure for most of my other cars which is open boot, pull plug from rear of light, replace bulb, replace plug, shut boot!
