Removing Compound Stains From Rubber

Hey guys,

Just put a deposit down on a MkII NA MR2. It is a red one, many of you will be well aware of how this paint will have faded over 10 years. A previous owner obviously tried bringing it back with a rubbing compound, but managed to get it all over the weatherstrip at the bottom of the glass, which has now turned a greyish colour.

Does anybody have any idea how one might get this out, or should I just replace the strip?

Its a pretty common complaint on the MR2. The window weatherstrip has a glossy black finish like that around the rear quarter window, its either not very durable or is badly affected by sunlight, in any case the finish can soon be lost. You can improve the appearance by using black shoe polish, its only temporary of course but certainly improved the look of mine. Ihave heard of people taking them off and spraying the hard section. Apparently new ones are pretty expensive.

If it's rubber then wipe it over with a cellulose thinners on a cloth. Best rubber revitaliser/cleaner you can get.

If it's plastic then DON'T. it'll dissolve the surface !
