Hi Chaps

I'm shortly going to be buying a Corolla GTI 16v. I've had a decent insurance quote of £800 third party, and can do any modifications as long as I dont touch the head/block.

Is there a buyers guide anywhere for these cars? Are there any data pages relating to them? apparently there were 2 generations of these hot hatches.

Thanks.

hi and welcome.

there are indeed two versions of this car. the early one made to late 1990 had aprox 120bhp and also had T-VIS (toyota variable intake system) and then 1991> had the 130bhp non T-VIS engine, and a revised interior.

the later model is the better one to go for.

only point to watch for is corrosion. wheel arches, talegate and sunroof are the main areas so check these for bodged repairs.

other than that these cars are fairly solid. with interiors wearing quite well.

there are a good amount of mods availiable but body its are limited.

any more question just ask.

cheers

Thanks for that dude.

How long was the later model made for? 91-?

Is there an easy way of telling which model the car is? I.e. when I'm ringing around what should I ask to identify the car?

Also, could you give me an idea of what price I should look to pay for a good example?

just to add to what dawesy said - also check around the windscreen and the A pillars and the back of the sills for rot. also, the rear calipers seize and are expensive to replace, or time consuming to overhaul, so check the handbrake works!

i think the very last ones registered will be on a '93 K plate, but these are very few and far between. Officially, they were replaced in 1992. to identify the non-TVIS version, look for the revised interior. also, under the bonnet, it won't have the TVIS Badge on top of the injection system (there's some other details as well, but ive not got an AE92 - these were just bits i remembered. someone else will definitely be able to help :D )

Eeerrrmmm...

Mine is a non T-Vis (late spec) with 130 odd BHP and was first registered in 1990 on an H plate. OK it was November of 1990 so close enough :D

Any way Kidkoala, Mine might be up for sale very soon (I also posted in you hello post not realising you had posted here). What sort of budget are you on?

Check out the spec and details of the work I have put into restoring it. CLICK HERE

Make me a decent offer before it goes on autotrader/ebay/PH and the likes ;)

Another thing you should watch out for is 5th gear jump-out. Apparently quite common, but the 4 I test drove and my current one never did this...

Generally l would follow the advice of the others above, but also use general knowledge and advice for old cars. smoke/tappings etc...
