Just filled up for the second time so was able to check my MPG. Supposed to be getting nearly 36mpg out of it.....actually got 30.79mpg.

I had done 300 miles with a mixture of short and longer journeys, in town and motorway.

I was hoping to get a bit more out of than this. Going in for an oil change tommorrow which may perk things up but....

Any thoughts?

replace air filter, sparksplugs and pump up tyres first.

an emissions test might be worthwhile... remember to get a printout of the results

You might want to try a new lambda sensor. It does sound a bit rich at 30 mpg for mixed journeys (depending on how you've been driving it...).

Other than that, if your air filter is REALLY clogged, it might also cause it to run rich.

Took car for a service today. Chap said he reckoned that running rich could be down to a thermal switch being knackered causing the computer to choke the engine too much!?

He said that this would be a job for Mr T to plug it into their computer!? Any thoughts?

He is going to do an oil change, plugs, clean the air filter etc. so may see it that makes a difference.

What are other people getting out of their ST?

As for an emissions test, it had an MOT two weeks ago just before I bought it so it must have passed ---- having said that I did not get the print out with the cert. and it also passed the MOT with a blocked washer jet - so I am not sure how thorough that was.

That seems way too low for an ST. I get exactly that out of my GT on the same type of mixed driving. I would say there must be something up but as other have said, a clogged air filter can make a massive difference. That's where I would check first.

Just had it back from service. Everything as clean as a whistle including the air filter. So had the oil change etc.

Will do another tank to see if it makes any difference but looks like I will have to take it to Mr T so that it can talk to their computer!!! :( Oh! No! That is going to cost!!! :(

Does your temperature gauge get to half way when the car is warmed up? If not, you might need a new thermostat.

It could also be the water temp sensor that feeds the ECU faulty/reading low. It shouldn't be too expensive for Toyota to fix that.

Temperature gauge gets to half way with 3-5mins of starting from cold so that seems to work. Could be the water temp sensor.

probably ur lambda sensor then!

whats the milleage?

did u get an emissions test to confirm?

Cheers for your help Cookci

Mileage only 41,000. Did not get an emissions test, my garage does not do MOTs so does not have the equipment - but it passed an MOT two weeks ago so everything must be within acceptable levels.

Worked out my mpg again using the correct conversion for gallons (I had been using 4.4 rather tha 4.56) this boosts my mpg to just under 32mpg. Still a bit low though seeing as I was not thrashing the car.

Going to put through a couple more tanks of fuel and see if get similar figures and then got to Mr T and get them to plug it into their computer if it is no better

Watch this space.

have you tried reseting the ECU to make sure it hasn't altered the settings when you had a batch of dodgy fuel or anything like that??

Probably worth a try

Worth a try, at the risk of sounding like a moron, how do you do this? Is it a case of diconnecting the Battery for a while or is there a clever little switch?

Can't remember off the top of my head but theres loads of posts talking about it.

Disconnecting the Battery should do the trick, but will mess up radio code and clock etc, there is an easier way.

I think it is removing the efi fuse for a minute or so, then stick it back in and drive like you normally would (no thrashing or just sitting still) it might stall when you stop at lights etc, so be prepared but after a few miles it should sort itself out.

Sotal, any ideas which fuse it is - looked in my handbook and the engine bay fuse box, there is one fuse listed as controling (amongst other things) ECU-2, is that the one?
