Anyone know how easy it is to repace the dash bulbs in a UK 92 Previa.

Fancy putting some blue LED bulbs in their to cheer the rather dull dash up.

Also what type of fitting/bulbs are the originals ? and how many ?

Thanks

I must say, that after your stirling piece of literature regarding "The Taming of the O2" I'm surprised to see somone of your technical mettal floored by something as low tech as Mr Edison's filament tube...

Seriously though... the old Previa dash is not at all complex and the bulbs are all wire ended (wedge "W2" I think) type, probably 12V, 3W... They insert from the rear of the dash, through the plastic pcb in the usual black plastic, quarter-turn, 2-pin fittings.

I've seen direct replacement coloured bulbs and LEDs (complete with the 2-pin fittings) available for this kind of fitting, so replacement won't be difficult... I think that there are eight bulbs in all... (excluding the system warning lamps)

The dash is secured by 4 self-tappers, hidden under the dash cover trim... there are three electrical connectors to disconnect and the gear position indicator has a spring-loaded cable that has to be disconnected from the gear lever linkage (auto's only) before you rip the dash out... :crybaby:

It's all made much (MUCH) easier by removing the steering wheel and the upper and lower column switch covers... only adds about 10 mins to the job and increases your life expectancy by centuries! (Literally :hokus-pokus: )

Keep up the good work... I'll be checking out O2 sensor prices this weekend..!

Best of luck with the disco lights! B)

LOL Jeff :D :D

Thanks very much for the highly informative and articulate reply

I dont know much about previas, or indeed cars in general. I know my limits and replacing bulbs, brakes and Lambda sensors is about as greasy as i want to get :D :D

That spring loaded cable for the gear position indicator sounds like it could get messy (visions of springs and bits of plastic flying off at great speed  ).

Cheers

S'not problem as long as that cable is removed PRIOR to heaving away on the dash... B)

I'm using the US Previa Haynes for my reference :bookworm: I've seen it advertised on eBay for £14.99 plus postage, but I'm fairly sure that mine cost about the same including postage, direct from the Haynes website...

Let me know if you need further info prior to having a go yourself... :hokus-pokus:

Have Fun!

could any one please tell me how to get the dash cover off to take the dash out to replace the bulb for the tempature guage on a 1994 previa

Do the lamps for the gear indicator get changed the same way? All my dash lights are OK (touch wood!) but the gear indicator bulb(s) are out and it gets a little difficult trying to work out whether I'm in drive or reverse when about to start off at night!

Got the dash out without too much trouble, then armed with a load of spare bulbs got the gear indicator off.... and found the bulbs are different to the main dash bulbs. They seem to be smaller versions of the quarter-turn main dash ones with the bulb permanently fixed in. There's a number : JSD V2 embossed on them. I can't get to a factor/Toyota dealer for a few days - can anyone tell me if these are a standard fitting or Toyota specials? TIA
