Hi guys, does anyone know how to improve the headlamps on an 1993 celica st182.i have tried aftermarket lamps with various different h4 bulbs ranging from 130w 100w... to 100w/80w and they are still crap. if anyone has a set of front fog/driving lamps for this model i would be interested in buying them.I live in the countryside where street lamps dont exsist so it is a bit of a problem at night..............any help would be appreciated.

It`1s a real problem with these type of lights. Very old design when you consider they`ve been around for 20 or more years in one form or another, it`s no surprise.

There were some crystal headlights on eBay a while back which i nearly succumbed to but they had no E markings so would`ve failed MOT. At the mo i`ve got phillips 90/100w bulbs fitted. But i`m looking around for a decent pair of projector driving lamps. Something small, discreet and deadly. :D

Yeah, the lights really are crap. I got back in my Rover over the weekend to give it a run out. I was shocked at how good the lights were having goten used to my Celica lights. I'm really surprised that Mr T didn't realise this and rectify it early on. I'll definatly be looking out for a way of improving them drastically.

I don't find them too bad (using 80/100W bulbs) myself. You could try rewiring the headlamp circuit with thicker gauge wire, especially if you are using higher wattage bulbs. This should make them brighter, by reducing the voltage drop down the wires. But it can be quite a fiddly job.

As for HIDs, Whifbitz do kits that should be are supposed to be pretty good. And they are considerably cheaper than £500.

Or you can try and fit the low rise twin headlamp mod, as some of the MR2 people on here have. It's an MR2 kit, but my guess is that it can be 'made' to fit the gen 5 celica.

the MR2 kits are a !Removed! to get to 'fit' the celica, but there is a guy on hte GT4OC who is making a set of twin headlights for the celica just now, they are currently in the testing stage as development has only just finished, once he's ready to start mass production i'll be getting a set, also coming with an HID option :D

Would it be easier to put a couple of relays in. Voltage drop is nearly 3 volts on mine.. Just checked. 14.3 at the Battery @ 3000RPM 11.6 at the bulb. But my dim/dip has been disconnected. Would that make a difference???

Using relays saves the hassle of running the wires right back into the car, but then you need to mount the relays in a box (along with fuses), to protect them from the elements. Then you need to find somewhere suitable to mount the whole lot. Swings and roundabouts really.

Not sure what you mean about having dip disconnected?

thanks for all the advice guys, i did my mot today and the guys at the mot centre were giving the headlamps a good going over and said the bulbs were a little on the blue side but eventually let them pass. I did buy a set of eBay a while back with clear glass lenses but they are still not great.

to lord-ed what model do you have ,if it is a st182 gen 5 i would be interested in the fog lamps.

u can get hid ones from fensport for aroun £500

im removing my fogs and replacing with diving lights ill let you knbow how it goes

What's the difference between fog lights and driving lights?? When I was reading about the gen 6 1 thing I read said the ones it came with were "driving lights" and then on the next paragraph it said they were "fog lights" (I think it was in the manual but can't be 100%)

I know you get 3 points on your licence if a cop catches you with fog lights on when you can see more than 100m, but what about driving lights??

In all honesty although the lights are not the best in the world the lights on the Gen5 are better than I had on my liner. I used to get into Roses Celica after jumping out of the GTR and be amazed at how far you could see in front of you compared with it. The GT is not as good as Roses Gen 6 admittedly but still better than the liner ever was. I'd say they were adequate at least?

I would say adequate is a fair representation in that they do, on a lit road make the car visible to other road users. On the other hand whilst on an unlit road in a situation where you can't use main beam, They really aren't up to scratch and are are well below modern standards.
