Knocking Noise In Rear Of Celica

Im getting this knocking noise in the back of my 1995 celica. It sounds like its coming from the rear left wheel. I thought it sounded just like a problem others had which was discussed to be the rubber bush on the anti roll bar.....but.....

TODAY, i replaced both bushes - even wrapped a little bike inner tubing round the bar to make sure it was really tight...... and first bump onto the street...KNOCK!

I hear it at low speeds and over medium bumpy/ rough ground. Any ideas? Guess i try the exhaust or something next :(

may be those 2 little link arms holding the anti roll bar in place.

strip em off if you can and see just how slack the ball joints are , they cost about £ 86 each at mr.t , but a good clout with a 4lb hammer makes em tight again.

Clout with a hammer sounds better that £86 to me... when i get into these things.... what do u mean by "clout with a hammer"? u mean take them off and hammer the joint?

Sorry if im a bit clueless.... just getting into working about with cars (late in life!) haha but im trying to do what i can. Cheers!!!

yeah a few hits will flatten the ends if you place em on concrete or nip em in a vice if one's available. make sure to leave the nuts on the top so you dont damage the threads, you will feel them get really tight after a few hits.

I have that high pitched rattle at the front as well. If you find out what it is let I know. It has defeated me!

High pitched rattle sounds like a heat sheild in the engine bay which is lodged in place by something else? Will have a look in Roses engine bay to see if what I'm talking about is possible lol.

As for a knocking at the rear........do you have a jack in your car still? If so is it secured or a little loose?

I have checked it properly... not the jack, its secure. While putting on new alloys today though i noticed the rear exhaust box has a pin that attatches it to the chassis bracket via a rubber suspension. The bracket at the chassis was rusted throung and broken. Will buy a new one and try replacing it next week to see if that helps.

About the noise in the front.... it drives me nuts. Its just a high pitched kinda rattling, chinging noise! its probably some clip or something but is near impossible to trace the location its coming from.... will keep looking and if i find it will tell where it was in case any of you have a similar annoyance

Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I hope I don't mess up my first post. Anyway I've got the knocking too. (95 ST202 Import)

I've bought the bushes, but not yet fitted them. It sounds like that might fix it. Nice to see there are some further options if it doesn't.

 Perhaps it's not the roll bars and what nots. I just got my '95 st and that noise is happening too! So far I have pin pointed to the fact that IT'S THE FREAKIN BRAKES!! I haven't looked at it yet but thats the only thing that could be making a clinking noise like the drums are loose or something.

I'll get back to you guys, but I'm pretty sure its the rear left tire brake that is doing it

I have just bought a 1995 Celica and get the knocking noise from the rear when on poor roads. I have had it checked at the local garage and they cant find anything (no loose bits) and can only suggest changing the shockers. Depending on the cost I will have it done and will let you know of any improvement.

i'd spend £10 mate and do the rear anti roll bar bushes before doing shockers 99% of all rear knocking is usually the bushes , the bar itself wears away and becomes shiney hence the sliver of bike innertube first .

i changed left hand side anti roll bar link helped with the noise, think the otherside is shot as well. Dunno where you got your bar from but mine cost just over £15, not toyota, but works better than a knakered one :) easy as pie to get off. think the right handside you might have a bit of a problme with the exhaust in the way, but dunno.

It does get rather annoying when you gove a pot hole and hear a clunk

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this??

I replaced the anti-roll bar bushed yesterday, there was definitely some wear on them especailly on passenger side where the noise appears to be coming from.

However, first bump on road and...........clunk!

Will try looking at those link arms next. Are they easy to get off?

Any where do you get the £15 replacement ones 'mrfil13' ?

they can be tricky to remove if you round off the allan head , then you need a pair of mole grips on the back to hold it while you take the nut off and plenty of wd40. but if you are replacing them you can butcher them to get em off.

  • 1 year later...

I can't believe it! 1" of bike inner tube fixed the my problem straight away. Didn't think it would work because the bush looked almost new and had absolutely no wear on it. (Not sure how this is possible as there is no record of replacement)

Anyway, cheers for the info I found, I can now ride in peace. :!Removed!:

My bearings are fine. It really was as simple and adding a slither of rubber. Did think that for some of the previous comments though but it would be more of a whining noise when turning in a particular direction.
