Strange Rumbling......

For the last few days now, I have detected a strange rumbling noise which appears to eminate from the offside rear wheel.

This rumbling can best be heard at very low speeds. Right up to the point of actually stopping.

I immediately suspected the shock absorber and performed the standard 'bounce' check on the boot and all seemed fine.

Next, up on axle stands to have a butchers. Nothing untoward except that the rubber covering the rear springs had split (on both wheels).

Tried moving the wheels laterally. No problems there either.

That seems to eliminate a wheel bearing change, or maybe I am wrong.

This is doing my head in

I have had my Carina E for 4 years of problem free motoring. It has just clocked up 140,000 miles and purrs like a contented cat.

Can anyone please shed some light on this.

Two things:

The tyre may be on its way out - Are there any irregularities which could indicate that the internal bracing may have failed?

My prefered option is that the drum may have picked up a foreign body which has lodged itself against the shoes. This has happened to me several times. The grinding noise will be more noticable as you draw to a stop especially when turning at the same time.

Get the wheel off and remove the drum (dead easy - you may need a rubber mallet to free it if it hasn't been removed for a while - remember to let the handbrake off??)) - thoroughly clean the inside of the drum - I use fine wet/dry paper for this.
