recently ive noticed my engine making two odd little noises

one is a sort of 'ticking' or 'tapping' noise, not very loud.... but seems to get quicker with rpm

the other is a sort of dumb squeal/squeek which seems to go when the engine is revved....

both seem to be emitted from the drivers side of the engine, which is a bit worrying!

can anyone diagnose anything serious?

sorry to hear that mate :(

could it be bearings in the alternator? it might be worth trying to disconect the alternator belt. i don't know how hard it is to do on a mr2 but worth a shot i guess

hope you get it sorted

The ticking noise could be the fuel injectors. Otherwise it is probably associated with the other noise you are hearing.

The other noise (squeal) is most likely something to do with the alternator drive. Either the belt is loose and it is bordering on slipping, or a bearing somewhere is shot (most likely in the idler pulley). Try tightening the belt first, or replace it if it looks worn/perished.

I get a ticking noise.. had it to toyota and everything because it was annoying me a little bit. They said it was the injectors.

I also get another noise which speeds up with rpm, but it dissapears once the car is warm. Havn't a clue what that is. Sounds like a belt/pulley type thing tho.

Mine is doing it at the moment too.

I've traced it down to the alternator belt, which I will sort out this weekend. :)

I get a clicking sort of noise from the intercooler side when it warms up. Is there some sort of pump or fan that circulates/cools the oil here? I had my alternator belt and aircon belt changed a few weeks ago. I can still hear a swooshy type sound like a slack belt when it's cold though  It gave a quick squeel (like a loose fan belt sound) the other morning when I fired her up. 10+ year old cars huh!

yes bud exactly that

from the drivers side

its not the fan as thats stationariy and i have tested the theory by unplugging the sensor

Check the air con idler pulley. They can go when you least expect it. It'll start off sounding like a small squeak, and end up sounding like a full on supercharger!

Mine went a couple of months ago. It's an easy job to do, just hard to trace 'coz the sound doesn't seem to come directly from where you'd expect it to come from (if you see what I mean ).

Other than that, the alternator belt/bearing will most likley be at fault. Another easy job.

HTH.

I also get that swooshy type sound until the car's warmed up. Havn't a clue what it is.
