Economy Mode

On the first Avensis's 97-00, there is an economy light on the dash, does anyone else find this can be a bit annoying sometime, ie: when overtaking it can hold the car back a bit in 3rd gear and takes a bit too long to come out of it and let it accelerate freely? It can be usful as it does keep you thinking about driving economically but sometime i think its more annoying than anything else. My Mum has just bought a 01 Avensis, the facelift model to mine and it doesn't have it in that, is there any reason toyota stopped using it?

Your car has the learn-burn engine, your mothers has the vvti. The Economy light on your car tells you when the engine is operating in lean-burn mode, so it's worth keeping it on as much as possible.

The lean-burn circuit only activates with small throttle openings and disengages when you press the accelerator hard, so it won't hold the car back if you want to accelerate quickly. If you're driving around town, and you find the car keeps flicking in and out of lean-burn mode, try dropping the car down a gear to keep the Economy light on. :)

how much more economical is the lean-burn mode?

I try and keep mine on most of the time, but I often wonder if it's more economical to drive in a higher gear with 40% less revs (but with the light off)
