Information About Celica's

Hello,

I'm looking to by a celica (1994-1999 or whenever they made them), my current car is on its last legs (or should that be tyres....?) I've been scouring the internet for information, this looks like the best place really. Just a couple of questions really.

1) How much BHP does a UK Celica GT have? (1994-1999 Sorry I dont know the tech name yet) I know it says about 168 in the pinned topic but everywhere else says 130 (US?)

2) Whats the MPG like on a GT?

3) Will repairs (eg clutch, suspension) be as much as the GT-Four or is a totally different beast

Thanks for you time.

Mike

the 94-99 celica is the gen6 (nicest model  )

The GT will return just over 30mpg on average journeys. Things like the clutch won't be as expensive as the GT4. The GT4 has a lot more power going through it so it needs uprated parts etc. I'm sure one of the people with a GT will be along soon to let you know how much things like the clutch cost.

I think the power is around 170 but it does depend on whether you get an import or not. The imports are higher power put require 98RON petrol - Optimax is about the closest at 97.5 RON. So you have to fill up with the expensive stuff! Or you can carry octane booster with you.

OK, the UK Gen 6 GT has 173bhp for models until 1996 and then 168 bhp til the last 1999's. I think there were some slight engine mapping changes at that point to give better emmissions which caused the drop. The 2.2ltr US GT has ~ 130 bhp which is what your reading about on the web. If your importing there are three or for different possiblities. the SS1 has about 140 bhp I think, the SS2 has about 177.5 bhp (this is the same engine as your UK GT but mapped for better Jap Fuel) and then the are some SS3's with the beams engine producing about 200/210 bhp depending if it's a black or red top.

The UK GT will return you about 25 ish mgp around town and about 35 on a long cruise on the motor way unless you drive it really hard in which case figures will obviously drop. I get an average of about 30 from mine from mixed driving.

Clutch is definatly cheaper for the GT than the GT4 as mentioned above. Can't say that I'm sure about suspension prices but if you get one that's been well looked after then you shouldn't really need to worry about it any way. Clutch is good for about 100K Miles btw.

Hope this helps

Andrew

The suspension is standard on the GT so you haven't got the expense of paying for the super strut suspension (GT4) which doesn't seem to last long before it goes again.

no sotal it only lasts between 60 and 80 thousand miles

a clutch for a gt4 can be bought for £ 159 plus vat , a st202 gen 6 2.0 gt clutch is around £92 plus vat.

some jap imported st202's can have super strut fitted as standard also.
