People join and place spurious bids often for hundreds of items at a time. Sometimes these are pure time wasters - other times this is the first stage in a Nigerian based scam called a 419 (after the section of the Nigerian penal code that deals with fraud) which if you are a fool results in you losing a lot of money.

If you look at the bid history for that item you will see dozens of bids by the same chap in a short space of time.

The big question is that the £1000 bid by gt492celica seems to be from a genuine chap (or chapess - sorry Asha). Perhaps he has seen the top bid, not looked at the bid history and decided it is worht something.
