Return Spring

Hi All.

I have just taken Harris to our local Garage to have the tyres rotated (as is the engine doesnt do a good enough job).

While there, he said the clutch felt funny. He said the pedle didnt have a lot of travel and the gears were a bit clunky. The clunky gears is a totally commen thing witht he Yaris from what i have read.

Now, he claimes that he has had this problem with a Toyota before, and it is the return spring in the master clutch cylinder that has either borken or just given up the ghost, so isnt returning the piston back to the right height and therefore not opening the clutch up properly.

So, what are your oppinions on this one then?

Harris' gear box seems to be as you all describe yours to be. Although the pedal only seems to have a few inches of travel, which does seem to be short.

Erm... pedal travel isn't much... that's how it's designed... for lovely heel-toe changes!

The only problem iv had with my clutch was it was really heavy, so i got a new plate under warranty.

Never heard of this one!

No, its not still under warrenty.

What is yours like?

Gem says the biting point is about half way through the pedal travel, but the travel is very short.

We think it is fine, but our mechanic doesnt.

I want to know if he is trying it on, or if anyone thinks this could be a legit problem.

As everyone seems to have clunky gears, i thought it was just the norm.

Seveer,

the clutch is very light, so feels fine.

As for never having heard of it, it sounds as though there si nothing wrong with it.

Our mechanic said he had very rarely driven a Yaris and didnt know if it was a problem, or just the way they are meant ot be. He was comparing it to other cars in general and the one that had something wrong with the return spring.

It is probably fine then in that case.

My gears arent so much clunky as 'notchy' - when I do nice clean changes theres a distinct clunk as they slide home whereas my missus rover is clunky!

Biting pointwise mine is fairly low and theres a fair amount more travel - which again keeps me on my toes as the rover is practically at the top of the clutches travel..

Does that help?

Clarky,

it all helps mate.

I should not have used the words clunky, just distinct. It is a possative click into gear instead of a floppy box.

How much travel do you have on your clutch, from top of pedal to bottom, not only opperating stroke.

I dont get that problem with my gearbox :)

MMT = perfect smooth changes up and down, no crunching, with the ability to sequentially shiftwith the right foot planted to the floor if I really want to ;)

Best of both worlds ....and much underated by the critics.

Red,

just at the risk of sounding even more stupid, what is MMT?

Multi Mode Transmission.

Toyota's name for the semi automatic transmission system that uses a standard manual gearbox but has an automatic sequential shift mechanism (similar to Grand Prix cars)

The MMT transmission is about £400 or so more than the manual from new.

There are two pedals (Brake and accelerator) and you get the choice of either leaving it in Auto or selecting Manual and flicking up and down the gears sequentially.

You never miss a gearchange and the right foot can be left fully planted to the floor if that is how you wish to drive. (Not that I do that)

It has none of the disadvantages associated with the "traditional" automatic gearboxes.

I chose the system even though I have held a full manual driving license for over 30 years.

This is the second sequential shifting car that I have owned and I dont think I will ever really want to go back to manual transmission although I do occasionally drive manual cars when I take a works "pool"car out.

I believe that one day most small cars will use the MMT type system.

Its a pity that there are not more MMT owners on the forums

HTH :)

That sounds pretty cool mate.

How do you shift gear?

Is there still the conventional gear lever, or does it have steering wheel mounted paddles like the F1 cars?

How do you shift gear?

There is a gear lever on the Yaris with a Neural, Reverse, Auto (Easy), and Manual gate. The Yaris does not have paddles (yet)

You can flick the lever from auto to manual and then flick back to go up a gear or flick forwards to go down.

To engage a gear from neutral you just put your foot on the brake and flick the lever into Auto or manual.

There is an LED display in the speedo showing which gear or mode you are in.

Its ever so easy ;)

Underrated?? Hardly... it's an auto... at the end of the day a manual will always be better than an auto! Just look at ferrari's and stuff... them flappy paddles are horrid! Unless im driving a big exec saloon or an SL55 AMG (oh lord wont you buy me....) i'll always have a manual... you change when you want, how hard you want, how quick you want and you change down when you want... auto's don't know what you're brain wants to do... your left hand and leg do!! :D

Seveer,

I know that I will never convert you but MMT is not like a "conventional" auto.

It does not have "flappy paddles" but a selector lever that when "Manual" is selected will allow sequential gearshifting up or down the gearbox and will only change up when I want it to.

It is possible to "Redline" it right through the gears and all this without having to take your foot off the accelerator as the selector dips the throttle for me at precisely the correct time (almost unnoticable) with very little power dip.

Believe me its great fun when you want it to be :D

I'd have to try one... so... next time your in leeds...!

After reading your exploits in your 1.3 SR .........last night on the Industrial estate, do you think I would let you near my Yaris?

It will never be as quick as your 1.3, but.....horses for courses, I love the 1.0 MMT :) :D
