I have managed to break both camshafts on my 2.8i. It has taken me a long time but have managed to find one new one for the off side (non distributer side) which i might get away with for a short period of time but would prefer to change both at the same time as well as the timing belt.

Does anybody know if any other will fit as the 2.8i are very rare and having troulble locating any.

So do any ohters fit and has any body got any they want to sell..........

thanks dudes and dudets :group-cuddles:

I make no promises but I will ask around next week for you. I am in NZ for the next two weeks and these cars are fairly common.

What sort of money were you looking to spend on 2nd hand ones in good condition?

Can you forward the car details and engine number just to be sure?

Cheers.

I got a reconditioned one for the non distributer side wich cost me £80 inc VAT and delivery. So really its only the otherside i need.

the enginge is a 5M-GE 2759cc (copied that from the Plate under the bonnett, doesnt mean a lot me im affraid)

would be very grateful if you have time to have a quick look, would pay upto same price as other one, but dont go messing up your holiday mate,,,,,,,

thanks a buch

Good luck with it.. you may need new cam followers and/or lifters.. as the 5M doesnt like new cams as everything around them such as lifters etc all wear evenly with the cams. When you put new ones in everything is slightly out and you get top end rattles.

Hopefully you'll just get away with it but i think you 'll need new followers and worst case scenario is new lifters, as you can pretty much be certain some lifters may already be stuck and were operating within tolerance with the cam.

If they have gone i can get you a full set of lifters/followers but they aint cheap at about £450 a set.

Cam problems on 5M's can be VERY expensive to correct.. sometimes better to source a new head.

thanks for the info mate......i really hope that it isnt going to come to that. it was just number six and five that were worn and causing a slight vibration at constant rev's. will find out the consiquences when i put new one in tomorrow. if it comes to the worst case i will definitley look for a new head.

Hi Gus , i had a 3 year love affair with the 2.8 supra some years back, and i'm sorry to say the 5M-GE was only fitted to that model of Toyota in the UK.

I've worked on several 2.8 engines, and a common problem is for the oil ways that feeds both camshafts cloggs up and in turn , starves the cams and tappets of oil.

My suggestion would be find a secondhand head and rob it of all the parts you need.

Start by looking in the Exchange & Mart for cyclinder heads, or maybe a jap import firm ,get a head from japan, good luck.

Bob, thanks for that mate, i think that is what its going to come to. so are you saying its no good dosenoffner looking for one for me in NZ then as it wont fit........not to worry if not will have to just surf the net and the magazines for a new head......

Other 2.8 heads will fit from around the world, but is just how much effort you have to go to get one  .

As i belong to several Toyota clubs, i just had a look in myTEC club mag ,but sorry to say ,nobody breaking a supra 2.8 this month :( .

lol..suprise suprise thats exactly what happened to mine... it killed the entire engine eventually. There are far far too many pinhole oil feeds on the 5M and the whole thing reacts very badly to neglected oil changes.

Once you start poking around the head my bet is you will find a lot of other oil feed problems as well... or i might have just been unlucky.

Ps Whatever you do make sure the followers go back onto their respective lifters if you have to remove them or they fall off. ie dont swap them around by accident, make sure each one goes back onto where it came from.

The valve block that feeds the camshafts in mounted just behind the cam cover ( on the outside between the camshafts at the front ) , small silver thing ,held on by 2 or 3 10mm bolts, take it off and give it a good clean out.

The feed hole is the size of a pin, and is at the bottom of the housing ( easy to miss ), if in doubt replace it :) .

This is going to be very interesting... this same problem killed my entire engine, and it all started with the blocked cam thing (it was just the tip of the oil feed problems).

I hope it goes well for you, keep us posted.

the camshaft issue............

the whole top of the engine is now in pieces all over the garage floor in eynsham...........the old cams are coming out tomorrow...

what a mess it is inside there............there is more gung than there is nice clean oil.......we have cleaned it up as best we can but the whole top end is coming off, being cleaned and then replaced......new head gasket the lot.

so basically a quick change of camshaft has turned into a more or less full engine rebuild.....im joining your club scot........everthing coming off, coming apart being cleaned or replaced........hats off to the lads at TCB......they havent failed me yet.

have taked a few photo's but dont have digital camera so will post when developed and i will scan and post in order......

knackered engine

top off

head off

bits and pieces

etc etc  :group-cuddles:
