I thought that might be the case...

once the engine is bad enough to block the cam oilways, it normally means theres a lot more problems underneath it.

I had to do exactly the same with mine.. took the cams off, removed the lifters, popped the head, put it all back together, ran sweet for two hours, then the shells went, engine out, replaced the shells, back together.

It was never the same again...mind you i'd never worked on an engine before and im sure i cut a lot of corners which may not have helped :)

For some reason freeing up the oilways in the head seemed to kill the bottom shells.. not sure why.

The hydraulic lifters were also a pain as they are so well machined that the lifter itself acts as an oil seal in the head, and if any tiny gaps are present between lifter and head (after the rebuilld) then the lifters dont pressurise, and you end up with noisy cams again.

i would have thought that if the lifters have to come out then you are asking for trouble....

Anyway, good luck with it..very interesting stuff. Id love to buy another 2.8 but this problem is mainly what puts me off.

Post those pics !

Will post the piccies soonest, mate,,,,,well the rest of the sarger......

bottom half now back together as of this afternoon. the top half is going back on tuesday night and then its going for a complete tune up and all the rest of the bits and pieces on wednesday and thursday.......so hopefully by the time i post on friday night it will all be back to systems go go go......

while she was in bits i have had all the exterior parts of the engine e.g. camcovers, heatshrinks, pipeing etc cleaned and in some cases resprayed, the lettering on top of the camcovers has been redone in red......have red HT leads and am changing all the pipes for high perfromace RED ones,,,,,,so not only will look goood on the outside but the engine bay should look good too.....

had big problems after got it all back together peeps......

what a knocking noise coming from the top of the camcover towards the front of the engine.... :crybaby: :censor:

needless to say a little happier as the missfire had gone  so apart from the horendous knocking noise not a prob........

so let her run for about 10 mins cus thought it might be the tappits just settling down a little.

:ffs: no such luck.......nuts :censor:

have manage to totaly smash a cam lifter at the front on the exhaust side of the maifold..

so back on the phone to TCB (thanks for all the recomemdations for that place)

full set of followers and lifters and get the :censor: apart again.......new parts in today so that just leaves about 4 hours work to put the top of the engine back together..

what an experience this has been from nowing nothing about engines to speak about to stripping mine down and rebuilding her TWICE in a matter of weeks since Caslte Combe :hokus-pokus:

thanks again to all those who help me with advice as to the problems and were to buy the solutions :group-cuddles:

What have u decided on the petrol issue mate?

Posted

thats an easy one mate now i have had the engine apart. found out she deffinatley has hard valve seats so its unleaded all the way with an adative in every third tank full just to be on the safe side.....might drop the performance a little but will use super unleaded if need the power :P

As far as i can find out, LRP is only 95 octane...... but ive been unable to confirm this. Im really happy everything is going well now, shes a lovely car.

The lifters and the tappets are a right PITA...

Same thing happened with me.. if youre putting in new tappets and lifters im not sure how youre going to go about getting a decent seal around the new lifters.. The lifter itself is the seal when its fitted inside the head (the oil gets fed around the chamber on the outside of them, as im sure you know).

Im not saying it cant be done, im just wondering how on earth it seals after fitting new lifters/tappets? Does anyone know about this in more detail? Maybe they dont need to seal?

This is all very interesting stuff... hope it goes well for you.. i could never get mine right afterwards (although i did bodge it and it sounds like youre doing a better job than me). Dont get too fed up though, it'll be worth it in the end.. the 2.8 is a great car.

adi,

sharnt get fed up mate, she is my pride and joy and may not be the fasted old bird in town but i have a purely plutonic love affair with her.....dont think i would ever be able to find one in such a condition ever again..........i am on the lookout for a complete interior is the next projext as mine is getting a little shabby now eighteen years down the line and the velour trim is just starting to come away.

will let peeps know how i got on with the rebuild after many hours of this weekend with my head under the bonnet :group-cuddles:

Whats happening Gus????

Posted

scot,

one of my posts seems to have disapeared mate but will reitterate. the car is dead.......complete new engine going in next week......managed to completly blow the bottom of the engine on its first run out after the new lifters and followers were put in

its the same as adi was saying further up the post that i causes lots of problems changing top parts of engines without sorting the bottom as well......

have two slapping pistons......broken crank........and the big end are shot too.......so decided to cut my losses and put in a new engine......was thinking of uprating to a 3.0 twin turbo but then she wouldn't be the original supra so got hold of the same engine as the original (5m-ge) hopefully will all be done by possibly thursday next week....will do it evenings as working away all week.......

will let you know whats happening.....

hows yours doing you got the new block in yet......

Posted

thats a shame gus... after all that work.

Its amazing that you had *exactly* the same problems i did, with *exactly* the same result.

I cant understand why fixing the top end blows the bottom end. Perhaps the blockages in the top oil feeds are somehow forcing more oil down to the bottom, and then when the top oil is freed there is a starvation of oil to the bottom...who knows. Its all a bit odd.

Has anyone else had the exact same problem? Its too much of a coincidence..

im so sorry mate. But im glad to see things are going ok. Ive got some more pics that ive put on the '73 rebuild...' post and am hoping to get the engine back next week.

umm, you could stick that Nos kit in, while ur getting the new engine worked on......

Posted

Bad luck Gus :crybaby: , when you fit this new engine, pay attention to the oil cooler and pipework ,just in case that was the cause of your problems( blocked oil cooler ,starving engine of oil ), good luck,

Bob B) .

thsnks bob will be paying special attention the the whole thing need my baby back on the road.......the thought of putting the nos kit on at the same time scot had crossed my mind especially after seeing what jemery clarkson and the boys did to an old jag by putting a nos kit on it (out ran and out accelerated a porsche 911 turbo) but was brought back down to earth by the other half.........have to get the thing running properly first.....then i can play.......but she wants her back on the road in her original state first.... :group-cuddles: got the trailor booked for tomorrow night (Monday) to get her down to the garage and then the work beggins........ all being welll back on the road by friday.......heres hoping :thumbsup:

Thats not fair mate, u going to have itt all back in sooner than me, as u know, mine went at castle coomb, not after..... git!!!! but we shouldnt argue over bad luck :D

I hope it all goes well, are u comming on the factory tour tommorow? if not u better pop round once she fixed up. Im having to build the engine up, take it to the machinet, then strip it down again, then build it up!!!! The joys of "make an engine out of several different types". Still, what can u rescue from the old block? have u damaged any valves etc? id keep a hold of most of it if i where u. U never know.... a few years down the line...

Ive got three blocks, 2 twin cam heads, one single, 4 carbs, 3 flywheels and pressure plates, 4 clutchs, 1 diff, 1 gerabox, 4 struts..........Bla Bla Bla, plus a RYANS CRAP HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GET RID OF!!!!!

Posted

yeah im in the same boat mate......keeping the whole lot just in case so to speak.......dont worry as soon as she up and running i'll be round.....you'll hear her before you see her :group-cuddles:  non standard exhaust going on

not letting any more secrets out.......you get to see the results at JAE :group-cuddles:
