Power Steering Not Working

Recommended Posts

Posted

Got in the car this morning, let the p/s and the other light go out

started it up ... within a few sec's of starting up the p/s light came on

turned it off and on again and it did it again.

So i let the car warm up the p/s light didnt go out , so i turned off

and on again and its still doing it... the steering wheel is incredibly

stiff!

This has only happened the day after the massive amounts of snow we

had when the car was completely covered with like 7inches of snow

probably be your P/S pump, or the belt might be slipping, or snapped?! (not sure what else the belt runs ?

Right...I had this problem mate. I ended up going to MR.T and paying £250 for the priviledge! My P/S soleniod had burnt out and these will set you back £130!

Go into the black fuse box under the bonnet (passengers wing I think?) and touch the top of the white solenoids after having the ignition on for a minute or so. If you feel one that hotter than the rest then its likely to have gone like mine.

But, I read a thread about this not long after. People were saying that turning the key to ignition and then off again (repeat 15-20 times) can actually unjam the solenoid and get it going again.

HTH

Good luck

Oh and the P/S pump should be electric and isnt run by a belt. It has one or even two ECU's to go wrong but dont panic, its probably the solenoid ^^^^

Well it def is on my Rev 2. If you take your spare wheel out you should see it underneath there somewhere. Rev 1's may be different, im not sure. On tickover if you move the wheel you should hear it whining away from the front.

yeah mine a rev 1, and it does make like a hissing noise when i first start her and reverse off the drive in the mornings !

My mate actually commented once, come to think of it - whats that noise, and i said, its the power steering pump - noting to worry about - forgeting the engines in the back -DOH -what an idoit !!

Well, I did the same thing with my washer jets. Wondered why everyone elses worked in freezing temperatures. Then realised that they have engines in the front thawing them out and we don't!!

Blood, hope you get it sorted. If you know someone with a diagnostic machine, the soleniod fault code should show up easily if it is that.

Blood, go for the turn off/tun on trick before doing (spending) anything mate. You should find it'll unjam and you'll be on your way again.

...you've got some luck mate :(
