considering getting some budget brake pads. Halfords do them for £25 for front set and with my 15% discount i get them at about £21!

has anyone used such a low cost pad on a car like mine?

i paid £13 for my st202 brake pads , a bit dusty on the rims but stopping was fine.

I always pay a bit more now, I used to have an escort and the local motor parts store sold me cheap ones for 8 quid for a pair (can't remember make but think they were a red packet with a white Q on them) I went through 4 pairs - never lasted more than a few months. They stopped the car fine and felt good, just wore out quick. I did do a lot of country road driving at the time - with lots of hills and sharp corners to brake for!

15% discount at Halfords - how do you get that?

I always use genuine manufacturer's brake pads on all my cars. Discs you can get from anywhere, as they are pretty much the same (often made in the same factory as genuine ones, just packaged differently). Pads are ultra dependent on the materials that go into them, not just size and shape. Mr T. will have done lots of testing to get the best wear/performance/safety compromise for road use. Companies making pattern parts won't necessarily have the resources to do that.

Cheap alternatives may turn out to be just as good, but IMO it's not worth taking the chance.

I agree, for the price difference I would go with the Toyota ones. Just to be safe.

Although with the celica I may consider the Greenstuff brakes, as they would look quite good behin the alloys, and should make cleaning the alloys less of a task

If you ask me you shouldnt skimp on the things which stop you from hitting other things ;)

Its not like you have to buy brake pads every day (i usually get 1-2 years out of a set) so you may as well make sure that when you change them your getting the best

Get some nice TRD pads :D

£100 for a set of pads seems a little excessive. i was thinking of around £60!

I paid US $60 for a pair of fronts.

£33 plus postage

i dont think any uprated parts for the st202 are necessary - i had 1 for 2 years on standard parts and stopping wasn't an issue.maybe fitting after market parts to a gt4 is wise taking into account the bhp.

  • 3 weeks later...

cookie - what pads did you go for in the end? I think I need some new pads and the old discs are a bit bumpy - just wondered if you had made a decision.

I had thought I was going to get the greenstuff ones to reduce brake dust, but someone on here reckoned they are *****
