Corolla Gti Induction Kit?

What induction kit are you peeps using on your 90 spec GTi's? There are rumours that the K&N kit doesn't fit.

As far as an induction kit goes, I assumed it was simply an air filter, and I would just need the filter with the mounting kit, and some ducting...

Apparently the air sensor pipes are left hanging when installing one of these kits, is this a problem or can I just plug the pipes?

Apparently HKS do a kit...

Any information/advice appreciated... I'm not looking for hughe BHP increases here ;) just hopefully make it all a bit more responsive

I believe that another member System~G had this problem.

Also I think KN do a filter that fits inside the standard Air Box (don't know if this improves bhp or just for advantage of longer filter life.)

If you do fit a 'Perfomance'/cone style air filter beware you might have 'icing up' of the Injection system in the winter in some way e.g. car stalling at junctions.

Righto might just leave it alone.

I had a JR induction filter on my Rolla. I got it from http://www.fensport.com/

I never had any problems with icing up of the injectors or anything.

As far as the sensors are concerned, I just tapes them to the side of the filter so they were as accurate as possible. Fensport do a Blitz kit which has holes to put the sensors in, but the kit is over £100, compared to the JR which was only about £35. What you've got to remember is that just cos something is expensive doesn't mean it's any better than a cheap version.

The JR kit has a wicked induction noise too!

Thats just it, people tend to get ripped off buying "induction kits". I need a performance air filter though really.

What do the sensor pipes actually do? What problems might i encounter if I block them off?

If you block them off, you'll probably make the engine run a little rough. I would just strap them up as close as poss to the air filter. I think they take the air temp which adjust the fuel injection automaticly. There's no need to block them off though.

On the stock air box there is a little tube that runs from the top-front-side (just above the electrical sensor with a blue connector) and runs back to the throttle-body. I think these two (tube & sensor) monitor air Flow.

There is also another sensor (black) that plumbs into the side of the box at the rear and I think this monitors air Temp.

After getting a K&N for an early spec car (K&N's website said the kit fitted both early spec and late spec cars as did the seller).

The Kit could take the black sensor (air temp), but not the air flow ones.

After speaking to K&N's R&D department, they said not to fit the kit as dirty air could get sucked into the throttle-body via the tube causing damage to the engine. I figured one could just get a small universal filter to fit to the end of the tube. But you would still have the problem of incorrect monitoring of dirty air

With the sensors taped to the sides of a cone filter they will be monitoring dirty air - which again is not good for the engine.

Pay the extra and get a kit designed for the car - it will prolong the life of the engine. Just my view...

has anyone tried the apexi power intake on their GTi? it is dam expensive for an induction kit

http://www.funkystyling.co.uk/parts/item_d...php?prodID=1665

im having the same problem as kidkoala, dunno whether or not to just replace the paper element with something like a green cotton element or get rid of the air box for an induction kit.i dont want to mess with the air flow sensors by taping them on to a cone, so any advice is greatly appreciated

I do agree with Garrick as far as it may shorten the life of the engine a bit. But from my experience these engines are almost bullet proof. I drove mine 15 miles home with a dry rad in the summer. Ok, so the heater stopped working (not that I needed it anyway), and there was blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, but after cooling down and being filled with water again it ran fine for another 3 years (50,000 miles) to 179,000 miles until I hit a lorry. Nice! :crybaby:

I looked at the air filter this way. Either I could pay £125 for an induction kit with the right sensor holes etc and the car would be fine. Or I could pay £35 for a cheaper alternative without the relevant holes and risk ever so slightly the engines life span. When you consider you can pick up another 4A-GE engine for £395, is it worth spending near on 1/3 of the price of a whole engine just for an induction kit with the right holes, that probably won't be any better on performance gains as the cheaper one?

The choice is yours.

I had the JR cone on my last gti and i LOVED it, it made a beautiful hiss noise and it performed better then stock in the higher gears.

Ive got a Simota racing on now, which is around 35.00 also, but it has a bigger cone, its a 3"inlet which ive bridged with a rubber adapter.

The sensor i have screwed into the position where the old box was sitting and also a carrot looking thing ive taped up just behind the old box position to another wire., ive also just left the black 5mm wide and 8" long pipe just hanging, DONT BLOCK THIS PIPE!!! if you block it the engine revs up and down on idle and in full flow and cuts out, it cut out on me LOADS of times on the motorway and its not nice, steering going all heavy and STIFF at high speeds, and it slows you down BIGTIME!!!

I would recommend the fensport JR system, and all the loose ends can be accomodated quite easily, and it fits DIRECT rather then have to bridge any gaps with adapters and so

Gary Mabbuts Knee - a guy sells the Apexi air filter for 26.14 + shipping of 15.00 on eBay, hes from malaysia, but he RIPPED me off silly on a HKS SPF, but you can give him a try as he does have a good rating, his seller name is 5400_Rpm

OH CRAP i forgot 1 thing, when you install the nex air system on, you have to adjust the little nut with an allankey to take the rev meter back down to 0.8 or itll shooooot up to around 1.5ish, it is really simple aswell, i could instrust if anyone wants help with it as i was forced to do my own and have done loads since

Corolla_Gti-r, Based on the information you have supplied in your two posts above, I would not recommend anyone take any of your advice ever.

Dude, you will be looking at new components soon. The hose you are talking about draws air (quite strongly) into the plenum then gets circulated into the engine. There is no filtering inside the plenum or anywhere else.

This hose should be used in conjuction with the fadgadget on the end of the blue connector.

You have two choices.

1] Continue running your car with crap (sorry cheap) "induction kits" and risk major damage

2] Keep the cheap "induction kit", block the hose and adjust you idle speed/co/emissions. You *shouldn't* loose power or have the engine stalling if done properly.

3] Get a small universal filter to fit the end of the little hose to at least filter the air going into the engine through it.

3] Do things properly and pay for a decent induction kit that accepts all the air sensors.

The majority of kits about are designed for the early spec engine with different air sensors and no resonators on the main intake hose.

K&N used to do one for the late spec engine, but had to withdraw it from production due to continued problems with air monitoring. The only K&N still available is for the early spec engine despite what their website says.

:lol::lol: well i suppose what your saying is true, so 1st thing monday im guna find a way to get the hole filtered. ill let you know how it gets along.

But about blocking it, I swear man, i blocked it last time with a screw and adjusted the nut to take it to 0.9revs and when it used to get a little warm, the rev meter would go from 0.9 -0.5 and then DEAD, happened on motorway a few times aswell, so that doesnt work

actually what ill do is ill get a piece of sponge around 1" thick by 2" long squared and then wrap it around that little hole and tape it up around the sides of the pipe, that should to the trick (proper cowboy tactics but your right it should be filtered air going in)

i bought the correct K&N induction kit for mine and it fits perfect, all the sensors are connected correctly and everything is fine. (had it on for 40,000 miles now with only good results. (and regular cleaning).

don't know what all the fuss is about, if you buy the wrong kit foryour car then expect difficulties. K&N do make a kit for both TVIS and non-TVIS, you need to specify which you have, make sure the shop understands or buy online where you can specify.

If you look at what your buying, you cant go wrong:

K&N57i induction kits for corolla 4age....

1.6 GTi 4A-GE (AE92) 1987-92 (NON-TVIS) - part# 57-0115
