Evening all, buying a cheap gti 16 friday.1990 120000 miles but i don,t care because i think the engines are bullet proof. One problem is that the previous owner had someone try to break in to the car through the sun roof,as a result it is a litle bent and won,t work, still watertight though.(he tell,s me!)whats the best way to go about trying to sort it.

1.try and source a complete second hand one from somewhere.

2.take it out and try and get it repaired.

what do you think the best option will be?.. :help:

Sourcing a second hand sunroof panel will be very difficult ...for they are the worst rusting part of these cars !

Even when the cars were only 5-6 years old rusting of sunroof was a major problem so much so Toyota UK instigated a 're-call' on all AE92 GTi's (whether or not roof had rust on it) back in 1994 /95 and checked (and replaced for free if necessary). I should know 'cause they recalled mine (although roof was fine). They did however replace the rubber seal and my roof has never rusted...yet

As said earlier, the sun roofs are notoriously bad on the GTI's for rust etc. Mine was rusty all around the edge of it, and eventually, because I only used to open it in the summer, it rusted shut. I just left it as when driving with it open it was sooooo loud that i couldn't hear my sub. I wouldn't bother mate, it's not worth the cost to fix.

just remove it, and pop the dent out from the underside they're only single skinned, Be aware of the profile of the roof before you lay it on a flat surface and bang the dent out though, lay some thick material down on a flat surgface and fold the outer edges into the middle leaving a 2" gap in the center, then do the same again leaving a 8" gap so the material at the outewr edges is thicker than the center then use hammer to gently tap the steel straight.

went down to see it today. My god what a state!!!!!!! H reg 149000 not 120000 like he said. All 4 arches rusted through, you could drive a yaris through the rust and holes in the tale gate.Nice interior but the green shade of mould over the roof lining put me off!Parcel shelf was something else!bit of wood with 2 speaker holes carved into it and then super glued to the original mounts. To top it all he looked offended that i didn,t want to buy it.anyone out there looking for a project and i mean a project drop me a line and i,ll pass his details onto you.
