Strange Happenings With Indicators

When the indicator stork is moved to the left ( nearside ) I hear an intermittent bleeping sound which varies in pitch & volume . When I checked outside the car this morning to see what was happening the nearside indicators were working along with both brake lights + rear window brake light ...... all flashing intermittently. just like when the hazzard warning switch is on! However when this switch ( hazard warning lights ) is pressed lights flash once and then nothing ...

The bleeping sound seems to be coming from the rear light cluster in the boot - is there a relay in there or something ? I guess its not a fuse as all indicator lights work. All is well with the offside.

Anybody know what is causing these weird happenings and how much its likely to cost to fix.

Model is 2002 1.8 vvti estate

Thanks for any help

My guess is that your Avensis has a tow bar fitted......

and you now have a dodgy earth connection. The dodgy earth is activating the 'bleeper' that is fitted with a lot of tow bar installations to comply with the legal requirement to warn when a trailers lights are not working, and creating the unusual light activations.

If your Avensis has not (or ever had) a tow bar fitted please disregard this suggestion as it is complete.. :censor:

Well MJG your hunch was right after all. On further investigation it appears somewhere along the line a tow bar must have been fitted aa there is a warning bleeper + main cable leading down thro spare wheel well . This had just been snipped & not taped up etc. so over time with water infiltration caused a short. It was an ex fleet car so my guess is that the garage that I bought it from had it away and tried to cover it up ......

Funny thing is it passed it's MOT last week with this bleeper sounding and obviously a fault with lights etc. Just goes to show :-)
