My 95 Paseo 5 spd has abt 170K miles. Back in december I took it in to get it serviced since it was misfiring and the engine light came on a few times. The mech did a great job, replaced spark plugs, wires, fuel filter. I also had him replace timing belt. Water pump needed replaced and some oil seal. Car is running great, but engine light keeps coming on. It has stayed on for a couple weeks, whereas before it would go off after about 70 miles and come back on later. I'm reluctant to take it in to dealer-afraid of getting ripped-off. My mileage has also decreased from abt 45 mpg to 37 or so. I thought the decreased mileage was because of the cold(below freezing temps since late november), but may be wrong.

Also, there is a slight ticking coming from the steering column present only during winter. Even if the car is sufficiently warm in winter, it still ticks. The ticking increases in frequency as speed increases.

Any ideas?

DUDE READ MY "KABOOM" thread.

THE SAME ***** HAPPENED TO ME. IT WAS A WONDERFUL ROD THAT SNAPPED BECAUSE I BOOSTED HIGH ENOUGH.

It could be a belt though

If i were anyone smart , id take it to the mechanic ASAP.

Even if its a timing belt , if it snaps your looking at a new engine shopping day. If its an engine internal , your still looking at a new engine shopping day.

Read my lips... ASAP. Get it checked out. I would hate to see you buy a new engine like i did yesterday morning.

Not with the 5E it isn't. It's a SAFE engine ( non interference I think it's called )- i.e. the Piston won't hit the valves if the timing belt snaps.

But I agree with ms-glanza-cyprus about getting it seen to as soon as possible. It'll be cheaper than waiting till it dies on you.
