De-cat Or High-flow Cat?

i'm going to upgrade the exhaust system on my TS... I've already bought 2.5" manifold and a backbox with a 2.5" inlet...

what about the exhaust piping - should I stick with the 2.5" or should I have it 2"?

about the CAT - I'm not sure wether I should get a high-flow cat or have it de-cat... I know removing the cat is illegal and I know the car gets loud - but what about performance? will there be a big difference between a high-flow cat and a de-cat? I guess the system is going to be pretty loud anyways so it's really down to the performance side of things... :blink:

what do you think? :wacko:

hello mate, im pondering this aswell im hoping to go down the de cat route, im confused though. From what i understand your going to get a perforamnce increase taking off the car as it will stop the restiction.

Do i need to change any thing else to the whole exhaust system?, im not interested in noise just performance, is there any need to change to backbox?

Wonder how much it would cost just for a de-cat, think bolt on one is best for mot time. Does the backbox effect performance from standard?

I’m sure the owners of the TOC being a responsible bunch wouldn’t condone things that make your car illegal especially on a public web site.

People get flamed for topics on speed/ing or racing in any form, but mention taking off a Catalytic Converter and no one bats an eyelid.

Why de-cat your car? Well from what I read on here it’s only for 2 things. A bit more speed (yeah OK) and sound (big deal) :angry:

Why keep it on? Help reduce air pollution, acid rain, smog, Carbon monoxide Sulphur dioxide. Help prevent conditions like lung disease aggravation of respiratory illness, heart disease etc

soory about that comment but you can see where im coming and i can see where your coming from, taking this into perspective its not really worth it de cating, though id still be interested in what gains you get, except acid rain etc etc

Manufactures are spending millions on developing new engines with fewer emissions and I believe Toyota themselves especially with the Yaris, met the criteria for exhaust emissions coming out later this year/2006.

I live in the real world admanirv, I have to work, I have to travel and I have to live.

My point is let’s not make things worse by contributing to air pollution and global warming just because you want your car to sound louder or want to drive a bit faster.

I love driving as much as the next bloke, but I like clean air as well, if not more.

Better to go with high-flow cat for reason given and not need to put things back etc.

Just realise an exhaust system is carefully made 1) to muffle noise and create "right" sound.

2) To ensure correct back pressure so sticking big piping on dosen't do the trick unless you have a turbo in which case you can basically stick big piping on and it will improve things.

True which i why i dont like the amercians for not signing up to meet emission etc

I live the real world too, do you think i dont work?!?, i do and very hard too!, i too am a human and have to travel eat and sleep etc :)

but granted yes it has made me think about removing the cat, sports cat is looking more likely :D

Sports cat. If your caught without having a cat on your car, your fined and you get points.

Forgot to add they'll be problems with the engine light thingy too wont there when taking cat or adding a sports cat etc.

I've just had my Eunos de-cat'ed by Longlife (it's legal being a pre '94 import) and it's made a massive difference...

Before you could feel the car holding something back, without the cat it pulls all the way through the rev range, you definately feel the difference, in effect looking under the car I now run a striaght through exhaust with no interruptions :D

Cost was about £40

No idea, probably more than £40 but thats £40 to simply remove a CAT. I have no idea. Ask Kevin, he may have an idea.

I was originally going to go the high-flow cat road but some guys told me that if I leave a cat on (even if it's a sports one) I might as well stick to the original exhaust because there won't be any difference...

I have no idea. Im just saying a Sports one will be avaliable, as to the difference btw, CAT, Sports CAT, De-CAT I have no idea. Would be a good experiement thou!

i asked about this before and if i was to do it i`d have to go for a sport cat, i think i`ll have to do it soon with the new turbo i think.
