Unlevel Yaris Blue

Hi All,

This morning i was going to work on the dual carriageway, when I spotted a Yaris in the distance going slowly so I overtook it obviously and before I went past it it seemed to have a really small front driverside tyre on it which had a black centre..I assumed it must've been the spare tyre? She was only going at 55/60 mph. It was an 04 Plate Yaris Blue btw, also I had to then pull infront of her to leave the dual carriageway, and all of a sudden she veered across the white line that goes along the edge of the carriageway and nearly up onto the verge! She stayed behind me (not right close btw, she was a good distance back) and it happened again on the slip road..so that was a bit nasty to see, she was so close to going up on the verge...

So anyway what I am trying to ask was that the spare she was running? It really did make the front of the car really unlevel! The spare is a space saver isnt it?

It was probably the spare - yes, they do make the car lean.

A couple of months ago when I had a flat I had the choice of driving the 25 miles to work on one of those or gravelling for a lift of a mate. I went with the lift ;)

Spare is a space saver - didnt realise it made the car uneven though - surely thats not safe.....

Yup probably the spare space saver wheel which is quite a bit smaller than the originals. Hence you should only use them to drive to a local garage or tyre fitter and slowly too.

55/60mph on them are too fast! Lucky she didnt skid across the road and cause an accident.

That might explain the near veering onto the verge she was doing then?

I think they have a maximum speed limit........... and are not much wider than a bicycle wheel

they are used just to get you to a repair place

about as much grip as a lump of grease in a frying pan

Space saver - max speed = 50mph for no greater distance than 65 miles.

They have a different rolling radius on the yaris (and most other cars too for that matter) which is why the car leans a little.. it also makes the car pull to one side( when used on the front)... hence the veering, handling goes out of the window, which is why there is a 50mph speed restriction when useing them. My tip,,, if you ever need to use it, put it on the back if possible.. much safer.

I have driven with the spacesaver on when i got a screw embedded in a tyre... car felt a little different, not much (did do too many miles / get up to much speed as it was through town to the garage)

It doesnt make it unsafe if you follow the advice. And it was on one of my fronts.

Perhaps she just wasnt paying attention, and then tried to correct and the car didnt respond quite as per usual because of it? *shrugs...

But it deffo didnt make much difference to me.

Also the space saver is definately much bigger than a bicycle tyre (at least 2x +) :P

space savers shold have the same diameter as a normal wheel. there about 3 times the width of a bycycle tire, there good for 80mph. well i wasnt going to drive all the way from wales at 30mph was i???
