Celica - Radiator Overheating Help !

OK!

SO MY GT STARTS TO OVERHEAT AFTER ABOUT 200MILES OF CRUSING AT 70/80MPH.

I STOP AND I HEAR A GURGLING AS WATER IS BEING BLOWN OUT INTO THE OVERFLOW RESERVOIR AND OUT OF THE EXCESS COOLANT PIPE BY THE WHEEL ARCH.

SO WHY IS IT DOING THIS?

NO MILKY FLUID IN THE OIL - SO NOT THE HEAD GASKET OR IS IT A PRECURRSOR TO THAT?

NO PETROL SMELL IN THE COOLANT.

ANY IDEAS?

JUST SEEMS TO BE OK WHEN ITS RUNNING AND I KEEP TOPPING UP COOLANT LEVEL EVERY PETROL TANK FILL UP - 250 ODD MILES !

PLUS - THE HEATER WHILE ON FULL HEAT (AND THE CAR IS WARMED) SOMETIMES WILL NOT PULL THROUGH HOT AIR.

COULD THIS ALL BE TIED TOGETHER? MAYBE THE WHOLE COOLANT SYSTEM NEEDS A FLUSH.

IDEAS ASAP PLEASE :-p

EITHER WAY - THINK I MIGHT SELL IT - ANY OFFERS (1987-uk-E-rREG)???

Hi,

Not to sure about the cause, you might want to flush the whole system and make sure it's bled properly. Thats the first thing I'd do. The heater matrix is tied in I think! Someone else might know better

Sounds like head gasket, maybe you're losing pressure somewhere?

p.s loose the caps! :)

Sure ok - the oil pressure gauge does drop some at lower revs when slowing down.

But when you put the pedal down - no lag, no power loss and the oil pressure never overheats.

Think a flush and then the H/g - is the answer.

First thing to do since the water isn't milky is remove the oil cap and check around the top of that for milkyness or condensation.

If they are both clear then go to Halfords or Toyota and say the following:

"Hello. My radiator cap is worn out and the spring is not holding it shut at the correct pressure. Since there is a pressure drop the water is boiling off at a lower level and I am loosing it through my overflow pipe. Can I have a new cap please?"

Exchange the dosh and away you go.

These things do wear out. And they are often over looked as the fault before people dive in with an expensive diagnosis. Garages will diagnose the fault that gives them the best margain with the least risk of the customer returning in general. There are more crooks than decent folk out there.

Just try the cap. Less than a fiver if it's wrong but cheaper than any other suggestions. And I'm sure it will fix it if your description is accurate.

Fair suggestion, I would of thought you'd have let the car get hot whilst idling to check for easily spotted leaks like that before you posted this.

Exactly my thoughts, I had a head gasket failure which was initially caused by the cap, thats why I asked if you were loosing pressure but you seem much keener on ignoring that & doing a flush through...

Hi! I am having a similar overheating problem, but much worse in my 1987 Celica ST. I will check the radiator cap!
