Cold Starting Problem

Hello all. This is my first post to the TOC so please be gentle.

Unfortunately, it is with a problem that is driving me nuts.

My '96 Celica 1.8ST, when cold, usually starts on the first turn of the key but then cuts out after 2-3 seconds. Then it won't start for about another 5-10 mins. I've tried flooring the gas pedal to clear any excess fuel (in case it's flooded), I've tried not touching the gas pedal at all, I've turned the key repeatedly every few seconds & also leaving it for long periods between key turns. After the 5-10 mins cursing it starts up like normal - no smoke or anything.

I've noticed that when the key is turned to the on position there is a faint whirring noise which I assume is the fuel pump? The Battery is fully charged, it has new V-grooved plugs and a new high flow panel air filter. I reset the ECU last weekend and that's when the problem started.

Please help as this is driving both me and my neighbours up the wall as they have to listen to me rant every morning. :censor:

Cheers

Rich

how did you reset the ECU? and why did you reset it. it sounds to me like its flooding, did you adjust the auto choke cable?

Hi Carlos,

I 1st reset it by removing all the ECU fuses for 5 mins. I then reset it again Friday morning by disconnecting the Battery for 15 mins as I found out you are supposed to also remove the EFi fuses. I did it because I've fitted a high flow panel air filter and drilled the airbox. I didn't touch the auto choke cable - in all honesty, I wouldn't know which it is as I don't have the Gen6 manual and am not very knowledgable under a car bonnet.

Thanks chaps but I think I may have sorted it. 48 hrs after the 2nd ECU reset and hey presto - it starts without a problem. I have started waiting 5 seconds between switching the ignition on and turning the starter over. I was browsing a few other websites and Lexus owners apparently have this problem a lot but sort it by waiting for the ECU pre-igntion checks to take place prior to starting. It seems to be working so I'll carry on doing it. by the way, since I reset the ECU, my fuel consumption has gone up from a pretty poor 27.1 MPG to a more wallet friendly 35.9MPG  (same run, same miles, same traffic jams) Cheapest, most effective mod to date B)
