Options For A St182 Engine

Hi everybody, been using this forum for a little while but this is my first post so thanks for the help you've all given me already lol. :D

Dodgy thermostat, inoperative fan, hot day and a partially blocked radiator caused my head gasket to fail. One warped but skimmed head later, it burns oil (seems to be valves as its worse at startup), has noisy valves even thou the timing is correct and I've had the rebuild/cam position/shims checked. It doesn't seem to have as much torque as it used to and the engine is generally more lumpy/whirry/noisy (as am I!)

I suppose this is gonna be expensive to sort out so I've looked into other options and have found:

a replacement block, head and EFT for £300 (no other ancillaries, low mileage, checked and 3months guarantee) - local wizard said he'd fit it for £150

Cheaper, more complete engine for a straight swap (getting more details tomorrow).

So, I suppose my question is, do you think I should repair the 65,000 engine I already have, or swap one of the second hand ones above, or is there another engine I could stick in there?

It's currently a Japanese ST182, front suspension has been lowered and stiffened already.

Thanks for any advice people

Cheers

Dan

Welcome to TOC!

Well mate, you've spent a fair whack allready on an engine with unknown untold damage that appears to be raising its head - so i wouldnt try any further with that sick horse.

£150 for swapping in a bare motor is very good, it'll take all day for a very competant mechanic and a couple for a decent mechanic.

the replacement block and head - do you know their history, mileage etc. what condition are they? are they seperate or from the same lump?

A Gen 6 Celica GT ST202 has the rev 3 3SGE with close to 180bhp lightly modded and fits straight into the gen 5 - bolts up to the gearbox. The ECU would have to be bought seperately unless they have one with an engine. A low mileage JDM engine from APi engines costs £600 with a 12 month warranty - it will be rig tested, ran with radiator, pressure tested, crack tested, spotlessly clean etc etc etc.

or you could buy one privately cheaper but with perhaps less warranty.

A ST182 3SGE is the obvious and cheapest way forward, but will you be getting a tired engine again?

A ST202 is imho the best way ahead - a better designed head.

even better if you get the transmission aswell - say from a 60K gen 6..

Or perhaps you want the Turbo'd 3SGTE...

Thanks for the reply and the friendly welcome dude.

Yeah I've had a lucky find with a local mechanic he and his three mates reckon they can do it in a day!

The st182 block/head/EFT is from one lump that has been checked but not reconditioned. Is 300 a good price?

Seems like a good oportunity to get an upgrade tho..

A Gen 6 ST202 fits in my Gen 5! Sounds good, could get a newer, low mileage one. Would I need to change the loom, mounts or anything else majorish?

Can a standard GT chassis/setup take a full 3SGTE? Would that be the st185 and ecu as the st205 has different mounts?

Ta mate

OK, I think my mate may have found a ST185 UK version. Will that and its ECU fit directly in my auto Jap st182?Will I need to change the loom or anything else major?

If yes, then I won't bother going to Essex to see it

Ta all

for a ST185 3SGTE, you will need the full loom and ecu, exhaust manifold. you will need to blank the bellhousing on one side as yours is currently set for fwd. get some very good tyres, all that power fwd instead of rwd or full time 4x4 is gonna be fun.

£300 for a rev 2 3SGE is a good price if its clean and all there.

hmm, just noticed your's is auto - GT4's never came auto - hell this would be fun.
