Water Build Up In Boot/spare Tyre Well - Carina

Hi Folks,

Just wondering whether anyone could has come across this problem or can point me in the right direction?

I have a 5 door 97 Toyota Carina, which has been fantastic in the 8 months i've had it, but noticed today that the carpet in the boot was soaked. I lifted it up and the tyre well (sorry not sure what the technical term is? - the hollow where the tyre is situated!!) and there is about an inch of water in it.

I've checked the seals around the boot and seems to be intact, and the body work seems to be sound. It is parked outside 24/7 and it does rain a lot in Manchester but I would have hoped that it could cope with these conditions.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this? and possible solutions...

Cheers if anyone can help

Jon

Water in the boot/wheel well area could be coming from a hole in the wheel arches. Have you looked in the side compartments for the tool and first-aid kits to see if they are damp? If they are water will be filling up in theses areas and overflowing into the wheel well. They have drain holes which may be blocked. A similar problem occured with my Carina II.

If the seal is causing the problem - try putting some talc (or similar) on the seal - If its letting water in - the talc would be being bleached away at that point.

Good Luck.

A suggestion, is to take out the boot carpet, spare wheel cover and parcel tray, lay the back seats down, you sit in the back while a friend sprays the back of the car with a hose pipe, using a torch ,look for dripping water around seals ,light units etc :)

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. It turns out to be the drainage pipes were blocked. I never knew they existed.... Seems to have sorted the problem, although we haven't had that much rain recently so we still might have to resort to someone lying in the boot!

Although still recovering from suggested this to my girlfriend (as I am the only one that drives and we have no hosepipe, living in flats as we do, it seemed appropriate that I drove us through the car wash, with her in the boot - she saw it differently)

Anyroad thanks for your help,

Cheers

Jon
