Dashboard Buzzz

My new (second hand) T3-x has just developed a buzz :crybaby:

It happens about (ahem ;) ) moterway speeds.

it sounds like its coming from the passenger side dashboard

but it is intermitent... it doesn't just start, it comes and goes :ffs:

(if you've ever worked near or on an airflield, and the radio has been buzzed by a radar, - the sound is similar - a very high repetition rate buzz)

I have put it down to a panel, maybe one in the wheel bay hitting a resonnent frequency with either the wind, or airflow through there.

I took the service engineer of the local dealership out in it to listen - thankfully it did it!!! The car is in the dealers tomorrow for a switch to be fixed, so he is looking at the buzz too.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this. :help:

It sounds different to the rattle talked about earlier in the forum.

Any ideas?

Stupid question, but have you checked that nothing is vibrating in the glove-box?

Not got anything in the glove box

apart from War and Peace - I mean the owners manual

oh, and the locking wheel nut remover

(these have been removed and the buzzing still comes back though)

There was a similar thread a week or so back PeaJay, maybe worth a look. I think someone narrowed dashboard noise down to it being short on foam padding. :)

I looked at these

these seem to be rattle/squeeks noise

my dash is mouse free. :D

I'd expect a rattle or squeek to be road surface related - the car flexing and two bits of plastic rubbing type thing.

My buzz is more of a high pitched Bzzzzzz that comes and goes - with no relationship to the road conditions.

I've tries the wipers - still bzzz

I've tried glovebox items - still bzzz

I've searched for hidden bees!!!

I'll update after tomorrow's visit to the dealer.

just back!

my buzz has the dealer stumped <_<

they are having it back in next week to spend a day fault finding

(hopefully this is all warrenty time - so It wont cost a days labour  )

The only similar sound that they say Toyota know about has occured on a RAV4 - a scuttle strip below the windscrean is spot welded in place - if one of the welds fails it can buzz. so they will be checking that next week

ho-hum

other than that - lurve my new Avensis

I just want the bees to go away! :ffs:

Just a thought - did you see that Top Gear a few weeks back when Clarkson drove a ferrari from the UK to the Swiss Alps in one day? No, well just across the channel he discovered an awful noise that seemed to be inside the car coming from the glove compartment. It drove him nuts. It sounded awful.

It turned out, when ferrari examined it, to be a slightly bent windscreen wiper on the outside of the car. Noise is a funny thing - it can drive you nuts.

tried that :)

it made the noise, and I washed the windscreen

noise still the same, regardless of what the wipers were doing :(

If your's is the manual version, when cruising and it making the noise, try pushing the gear stick a bit futher towards the 5th position (push it all the way to the top corner and hold it) and see if that stops it temporarily as it could be the linkage that's making the noise.

I posted earlier about a noise/rattle/vibration that happened on my Rav4. This had the workshop stumped as well. Turned out that the offending item was under the bonnet! In this instance it was an ill fitting fusebox cover which was vibrating. Worth a look under the bonnet for anything loose. I also had a similiar noise to what you describe in a Ford ( Sorry !!!! I was young at the time) and this turned out to be the speedo cable, which was resonating against its casing inside the cable, only happened at a certain speed and was a high pitched whine and this sounded as if it was coming from the passenger side of the car! I know this next thing may sound a little daft, but, a friend of mine had this. He had a label attached to a cable in the engine compartment which at speed acted liked an aerofoil and made an awful buzzing noise. Only found out by cutting it off in desperation - noise never to appear again. Isnt sound a wonderful thing!

Got he same thing with my 2004 t2 estate didn't think about it until I saw this thread.

Found also my gear knob rattles it's a wood and leather Toyota accessory, it seems to be under motorway acceleration. Apart from that very happy with car, top work horse.

Ahhh...

I'll suggest things rattling under the bonnet when it goes in.

and lables on cables

The garage had the car whizzing up and down the local bypass with a mechanic with his head stuck into the hole where the glove box should be...

sounds funny now...

I just want the noise to stop :ffs:

I suppose I could just drive the car below 60mph all the time... Nahh - that'll never happen! ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a similar noise in my 2000 Avensis estate. It was coming from the passanger side and only appeared under hard acceleration.

I thought it was the glovebox or something behind it, but after removing most of the trim and taping everything that moved, it still appeared :crybaby:

I looked under the bonnet, but again drew a blank.

For some reason I thought I'd remove the cover next to the fog lamp and have a peek behind  . I had a look then put my hand inside and started waving it about like a mad man :arrgg-matey:

I tapped the wheel liner and started to hear the noise

I traced it back to a loose captive nut that was attached to the inner bumper/wing connection and after removing the offending nut I was finally rattle free :D

Hmmmm

Still not got it sorted :ffs:

when it went in last week it was tipping down with rain so they weren't happy to tank about at 80mph to make it buzz.

They went out in it once, said they heard no buzz therefore it has probably fixed itself fixed.:huh: (certified - authorised Toyota main dealer :arrgg-matey: )

I scoffed at this and it is booked in for tomorrow. :hokus-pokus:

Hopefully the cats and dogs will have stopped by then!!!!

Ok...

back from the dealer...

(I take it back, they are a nice bunch of people after all :group-cuddles: )

They have stripped the front end of my car down

and filled in some holes in the scuttle strip, tightened a few bits and bobs

When I drove it to work this morning, I tried various - ahem - motorway speeds...

No Buzz!!! B) I could get it constantly at about 90mph - not that I would drive that fast. It was a scientific experiment your understand officer

Now, this is one trip, one test, but I'm keeping every bit of me crossed for the journey home. Hopefully the garage has found the culptit, and given it a good talking too :bye:

They are raising a Toyota wide fault report on it anyway, but I did promise to do fault finding if the buzz still occurs, eg speed range, cross winds, road conditions etc...

 Wish me luck that the bees have gone and wont come back!!!
