How many wires did you say were on it ? and where did they go ? It could be an alternative ECU ???

Other than this it could have been some tracking system that the previous owner put in.. Can you get closer pictures of it ? the wires going in and out ?

These Jap cars are odd things eh !?

I wired in an RF modulator at the weekend, all of the wires to my stock stereo are black. What a f**king nightmare, it took me 2 hours to find the right ones with a volt meter..

After reading that thread then it seems that it must be part of the stock amp circuit:

The box that is sometimes found behind the centre storage box is the DSP bit for the top-range factory stereo (Identified by the DSP button on the stereo).

This bit proves it because my stock toyota unit had the DSP function (was pretty cool when it worked!)

Woah! That looks impressive Deus. You still using that HiFi? If not, and it's still working, I'd be interested in buying it.

I installed a Sony unit last year but I've still got that unit with me Earl. The cd-player lens needs cleaning (I tried but it still skipped alot!) but apart from that everything should work. I wouldnt feel right charging for it though so if you want it you can come collect it for free if you dont mind a cruise down the M4 lol

Bear in mind the plugs on the back are different than the normal toyota stereos and you'll need to wire in the DSP system somehow! :bookworm:

Thats exactly the stereo I have in my Tubby. I have got major problem with the CD player skipping and rejecting CD's.. Have you found a way of cleaning it ?

Cheers.

Dangerously Sweet Popcorn... :P

Posted

right no popcorn as of yet :ffs:

first things first, i have been out breifly in the car and the box was warmish to the touch (sort of how the stereo normally gets) wether thats caused by ambient temp i dont know but it seemed warmer than the air...

unpluged it, strated car, no problems it seems, everything looks as though it works

the box

rough pic of the wires, they seem to (although i havnt removed the centre section) all travel to the front of the car?

FOUND A STICKER!

gallery_3690_41_1112375568.jpg

it reads

MODEL No 86230-17010

REF No CY-US315OA

Made by Mitsubishi Electronics :unsure: :!Removed!:

and finally i bust it open, and with the amount of capacitors in there id be deathly inclined to 'audio' equipment!

DSP = Digital Signal Processor

Have to admit, I have one built in to my Pioneer and I use it all the time to change the equaliser pattern to suit the style of music. Not sure how the stock one works though.

The wiring looks very much like an AMP.. I had my stereo out the other day and the number of wires that ran to the AMP look about the same. The other two blocks must be to the Speakers and sub..

Maybe the premium system has the amp in a different location from normal ?

Yeah theres two plugs on the back of the DSP type headunit, one connects the same way as the standard system (but using a different plug) and the other goes to the DSP system I think.

The DSP system was actually pretty good, it had settings like hall, concert, theatre etc and some settings made the interior feel "bigger" if that makes any sense. Quite primitive by todays standards but impressive for a stock system nonetheless.
