This entire topic was covered last year when I experienced the exact same issues with what is now Conrad's (Kidkoala) car. Perhaps someone can add the fault, cause and solution in the "Workshop Submission" section of the site.

In my experiences a number of times ever since I experienced it with the GTi, if there is hesitation/surging with Toyota's it is more often than none nothing to do with ignition components. It's usually an air-fuel mixture issue controlled by the MAP sensor.

FYI, the MAP sensor on post 1988 versions of the MKI MR2 is the same as the GTi so if stuck for the parts there are a more MKI's in scrapyards than GTi's
