Bp Ultimate - Better Mpg In My Prius?

Put simply....no.

I was feeling flush (payday tomorrow) so I filled up with a full tank of BP Ulimate on the basis that it may provide better mpg than common-or-garden unleaded.

Drove 340 miles from Derby to Norwich and back at mostly motorway speeds and, apart from having a lighter wallet there was no difference I could detect.

No doubt someone will tell me that to get benefit from it you have to keep using it. Sorry but the name Braindead was supposed to be ironic!

Anyone else tried any of these "premium" fuels in a Prius?

Probably no benefit. If you look at what BP are offering in terms of extra mileage it is usually 25 miles per tank.

As a new Prius driver who now watches the consumption with considerably higher attention than before, I would think this fact would be very hard to prove.

Better driving practice would almost certainly equate to a higher gain than that for most drivers. What of the increased cost of Ultimate (By the way I had to keep going back and put the "T" in). Surely this more than offsets any gain in consumption anyway.

If anything all your going to get is a bit more detergent.

Clean smoke anyone?

I dont have a prius, but i do know a bit about the fuels,

The BP ultiamte is definatly not going to be more economic then the regular unleaded, The regular petrol burns at 95RON which is Thicker then 97RON (BP ultimate) meaning it burns quicker and supposed to give more performance.

I use it every weekend when i go racing :D :D and it CERTAINLY makes a difference in acceleration and in economy. it drinks you DRY but it SHIFTS hardcore. Shells Optimax is the best 98RON

Or if you REALLY wana add some HP, go for Cool Blue (107RON) that stuff will make you go like never b4 and costs around 3.50 per/litre :( :(

But Regular fuel is better if your looking for fuel economy compared to Ultimate or optimax as it doesnt burn as quick

hope this helps

Octane number represents resistance to ignition. Lower octane fuel ignites more quickly and burns FASTER, not slower.

High octane fuel is for cars with very high compression and/or advanced timing and a turbo or supercharger. Those cars run a bit hotter and there is the risk of the gasoline pre-igniting, which causes knocking. Modern cars have knock sensors, which means a car that is recommended to use high octane will !Removed! ignition timing if you fill it with lower octane fuel, which causes a loss of power. This DOES NOT work in reverse however. A car designed for regular will NOT advance timing if you put in high octane fuel.

The bottom line: If your car is designed for regular octane fuel you will NOT gain any perfomance by using high octane. ALL HIGH OCTANE DOES IS RESIST IGNITION. It doesn't have magic horsepower boosting fairy dust in it. It might decrease your fuel mileage very slightly because it burns less completely, but it wont' give you even one more horsepower. Save your money.

If you don't beleive me, do 10 minutes of research on the internet. Even oil companies admit high octane fuel does nothing for cars not designed to use it. End of story.

Tesco Super Unleaded is 99 RON. Does this mean it is 'better' than Optimax at 98 RON?
