Brake Pedal Movement

Hi I have just purchased a 1.4 D-4D (Sol equal to T3) with MMT box.

I had a ZX 1.9D auto for 12 years but the smaller Toyota engine has much more power and torque and because of the engine capacity is considerably cheaper in Portugal. My query is regarding the brakes which are very different from what I am used to.

When parked and pressure is applied to the pedal it is possible to put the pedal to the floor. The same applies if the engine is running.

When the car is moving the whole system firms up and the brakes are extremely powerful. Is this normal and what is actually happening?

So far I am extremely pleased with my choice and the car drives well with no faults. Consumption to date with short runs only 54mpg as per the computer
