The ride on my Paseo has got very crashy on rough roads, so today I replaced both rear shocks with KYB ones. However, when the offside rear wheel hits a pothole or bad bump it still crashes badly. I have had a look and each time the bump stop on that side is being dislodged, suggesting the shock is bottoming out, why? Have tired swapping shocks over, no avail. The car sits level and the spring seems fine, any ideas as its really spoiling the cars ride?

Sounds like rear strut mount mate. Look at where the shocker top comes through the mount while someone bounces the rear of the car, if there's any play, the metal bush has come adrift from the rubber mount

I managed to destroy two in as many months with enthusiastic driving

Replaced them with heavy duty TRD ones from Fensport, the shocker sits better in the mount too and so far they've been ok

maybe the dampers werent fitted properly? i cant see why else the bumpstops would be dislodging, and i doubt itd be the shocks as new ones shouldnt do that. just to make sure though, an easy way to see if the shocks are gone or not, go to the back of your car and start pushing up and down on the boot and then let go...

if it keeps bouncing up and down for a few more oscillations, then the shocks are worn, if it just rebounds once and then settles, then theyre good

hey daz, im sure ive asked you this before but the trd mounts you got are starlet ones right? which ones to be exact and whats the part numbers (front and rear this is)? i bought some kyb gr2's when i was in america for new years and they came in after we left so the family friends we stayed with still have to send em over

Same as GT Turbo if I remember rightly, can't remember part no's but Fensport checked out with TRD Japan before they ordered them. Much stronger and better design than OE ones which definitely have a design fault in them, the lip on the shocker top sits against the metal bush but the bush is only bonded so there's nothing to stop it pushing through

Well, it appears to be the shocks themselves, as the old Toyota one thats OK doesnt do it! Its as if they just arent quick enough to stop shocks from potholes etc, they are OK otherwise but definetly softer than originals. The offside was fine until my wife got in and then it started bottoming out and shes only 10 stone!!

Going to ask supplier what he reckons and then get some genuine ones...

maybe theyre faulty then, cause i mean the KYB GR-2's are supposed to be " comfort " shocks as such, but i mean not even comfort shocks should bottom out so easily. and theyre supposed to make the car handle better as a hole. My car does bottom out quite easily too, the front especially on speedbumps, and the rear anyway...

but you must take into the consideration that the very fact that paseo's have a torsion beam rear axle & suspension setup means that the paseo will never ride as good with something that has irs so a bit of " crashing " down on bumps is expected....bottoming out though is down to the shocks

Thanks for all your help guys. Weird this but yesterday the crashing seems to have got a bit better! I dont know whats going on here but its as if my Paseos got a ghost. Was fine for the 2 years the wife had it too!! Will keep an eye and ear on it, but I think genuine shocks are the way to go as they were so much better at damping it.

:D Fixed it!!! What was happening was the shockers piston going into the top mounts metal bush was dislodging the bump stop, then the little collar on the piston was crashing against the bush.. result was loud bangs! So, have put in a large washer to stop mount from dislodging bump stop and result is perfect ride and no banging.
