Mr2 Cold Start Trouble

hi new comer looking for some help.

starting from cold the car seems to not apply any "choke" so the car just idles as it would when its warm.

if i then rev the car it revs up fine but does not return to the idle position instead drops right down to about 250 rpm as if it where going to stall. this continues for about 3-4 mins or until car is warm.

any advice on what would cause this would be greatly appreciated

thanx

Mine's a bit like that but it's ok when it's warm. Choke doesnt kick in for about 20 secs, so the car tries to idle at 800-1000rpm cold. Like I say, not a problem when its warmer, and a service didnt change it for me.

I'd look at the Idle Speed Control Valve first, there is a troubleshooting procedure in the workshop manual Clicky, look in the EFI system section in the mechanical book

i have tried changeing leads plugs and all the filters have been changed on the last service about 2 months ago. i was thinking maybe it was the ambient air sensor but dont know if the mr2 has one or where its likly to be ?

any ideas

  • 2 years later...

My MR2 is pretty much the same...

After starting in the morning, it tries running at around 1000rpm sometimes less and a few times its just stalled.

The choke usually kicks in after around 15/20 seconds and the RPM slowly rises to around 1500rpm sometimes 2000...

Seems to be a common thing in most MR2's and other Toyota Models...

You could try the idle intake valve... but its not a big problem... just slighty annoying!
