Hi there, before I go poking around, does anybody know how to check the auto choke on a carb carina II 1.6. The idle when warm, varies from 600 to 1500 RPM. If high, when I blip the throttle it falls most of the time to 600.

The new plugs are the correct colour except for sooting near the base of the ceramic, air filter has been changed and the car is running fine otherwise with a MPG 0f 32 ish.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

P.S. If reved in neutral, it rev's quickly then falls slowly. heavy flywheel?? or relevent to my problem??

thanks again

The auto choke is a standard heated coil type. If it opens when warm and blipped I would be thinking that the spindle on the choke plate is sticking. some lubrication should do the trick.

Remove the air filter and set the ignition dash lights. With the engine off the plate (which is visible on the top of the carb) should fully open in a matter of minutes. If not the element may be faulty. Make sure power is reaching the element housing before asuming this.

Good luck
