Noise (possibly Front Nearside Brake)

OK I knew it was going to come one day!

My Celica has just started making a noise. It mostly just makes the noise when I first set off after stopping for a while.

The noise sounds like a stone stuck in the brakes or something. It makes like a tssk, tssk, tssk noise from the passenger footwell which is louder when I open the window. As I go faster the noise gets faster as well and when I brake lightly the pitch of the noise changes - If I brake heavily the noise stops. After about 5 minutes of driving the noise stops (it also stops at speeds over 40mph) The noise will then sometimes return after slowing right down and setting off again.

OK so thats the description! Any ideas on what to check first?

I looked at the outside pad (the one I can see through the alloy) which has only got about 4-5mm left on it. The discs aren't perfect and raise and dip slightly over the service but there is no definite scratch or score in either side of the disc.

I originally thought it might be that the inside pad was worn - but when I have had pads wear out before they make noise when you brake rather than stopping when you brake.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Only one way to find out for sure. Whip the wheels off and have a look. Hopefully something simple. Check all the usual things like track rods, Wheel bearings, CV joints and balljoints while your at it.

I did wonder about a wheel bearing, but figured it wouldn't be that because it changes picth when I brake lightly??

I started a day after I had to heavily use my brakes. I let a car out infront (being kind etc) The road then splits into two he went off in the left and I started to pull up alongside him to the right. He then realised he was going the wrong way and swerved into me without any indication - forcing me (who by then was going to fast  ) To slap on the brakes and skid along on some gravel. So I'm farily sure it is the brakes. I'll whip the wheel off this weekend and have a poke around. Looks like pads aren't far off though so may get a set of pads and discs for the front

Possibly picked up some gravel in the caliper?

possibly gravel...

Just had to go out of the office for a couple of hours. When I set off the noise started, but this time it never went! I was only driving for about 10 minutes but all the way up to 50mph it kept doing it, so I thought bugger - I need to sort it now. So I parked up, did what I needed to then got back in to drive back ad it didn't make a noise at all???

Strange - needs more testing before I can say the noise has gone, but fingers crossed - maybe the gravel disintegrated??

Al agree with Daktari, whip off wheel n have a look. Only prob i had like that turned out to be the steel disc cover that somehow bent over and was slightly catching the disc.
