Petrol Octane Rating

Red Yaris 54

I went to my local Sainsburys filling station this evening and Unleaded 95 Octane and Super Unleaded 97 Octane were both the same price.

Question is would putting 97 Octane in my 1.0 T3 make any difference?

(MPG/Performance?? :) )

If so the Super 97 Octane seems a bargain..........or the normal 95 Octane Unleaded is overpriced.

Has anyone any words of wisdom? B)

IF they are both the same price then put the 97 Ron in the tank.

Dunno if you'll really notice any difference, but it doesn't seem right to pass up an opportunity like this.

BP Ultimate and Optimax are 97ron..... but more £'s.

I believe your CPU will regulate the timing etc when different fuels are used (I think  )

From memory Kimi uses it now as a matter of course after the SC conversion - not sure if thats by recommendation or as a good idea...

i have to use 98 ron so its Otimax only for me now :D

TTE told me to use it,if i use 95 my ecu light flashs on,they also

put a 98only sticker inside my fuel flap.

but as has been said if your fuel station is charging same price for both,

put the 97 in its better fuel.

I always use optimax... after a few fill ups mpg is improved and the whole car definatley runs a lot better... bit smoother. Plus, a better fuel like optimax will help keep your engine clean as it's the best fuel... not the cheap sludge that supermarkets use.

Iv used additices too, and iv got a fuel system cleaner in my tank at the moment. for a few quid they work very well... car warms up quicker, runs smoother and quieter and is also more responsive. Good stuff! I like my car smooth and super-fly!!

I use BP Ultimate in mine, 97 ron too :). I find it lasts me longer compared to 95 ron, and on my previous 1.0L it definately made an improvement in acceleration.

It's a myth.

If you go to Shell just use their standard unleaded.

Optimax is:

- Expensive

- Doesn't increase performance

- It is cleaner, but isn't gonna make much difference compared to standard unless you plan on keeping the car or a lifetime! (they never had it before and 15+yr old cars are still running fine!)

- More mpg, but high price, so it defeats the point

If you have the money, then sure get it cus it is better for the car (and in kimi's case I can understand why she has to have it).

But to be honest there is absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with 95ron and it'll save you some dosh too! However, I would suggest that you use a brand fuel rather than supermarket fuel (as supermarket fuel is just different brand fuel mixed together depending on whats cheapest - so it dirtier!).

Be thankful, in a lot of countries 90-92ron is standard (and 95ron is ultimate!) - like in new zealand :)

Whilst my "local" Sainsburys is charging the same price for 97 RON Super unleaded, as for 95 RON unleaded I shall continue to fill up with 97 RON .

I wonder how long it will be before they realise and up the price of Super?

BTW the guy in the petrol station drives a YARIS..........sensible chap

I heard it described on general as a placebo - that sums up how I feel about it!

You think its better, therefore it makes it better!

As a busy working house-gf and "mother" ;) - I dont have the money to waste on fuel - if I had a performance car, then I would use it (lol if I could afford a performance car I could afford the performance fuel! lol), to increase fuel efficiency - but on a 1.3 Yaris, which is already fuel efficient and economical, I just dont see the point!

Agreed Em,

I am only buying it coz its the same price as ordinary unleaded in that particular filling station so If it gives me more MPG or "increases" performance it will be worthwhile.

If it does not, then I will have not wasted any money

Very true - if I was in your situation then I would have too! But not if its more expensive - 95 RON fuel is expensive enough at the mo IMO!

I agree with Em about the 1.3 not being a performance car...but for me I like having higher ron petrol as it lasts me longer, and I believe it to be cleaner than Supermarket fuel. Sure supermarket fuel isnt going to damage the engine beyond repair..but I will choose the cleaner fuel for as long as I financially can.

You should use 95ron brand fuel (like Shell, texaco, or esso). It's cleaner than supermarket fuel, but not at a silly price like Optimax/Ultimate (infact in some places it's the same price as supermarket fuel!).

I agree with Em about the psycological effect of Optimax. A friend always swore by it. But during the insane price increase he just couldn't justify 95-99p a litre. And after that he has never gone back to it because he noticed NO difference (and this is in a performance car!). I've always been pesemistic, and when I use it I never felt it's any better.

Well thats my mind made up then - no 97 RON for my performance car either!

The way I see it, I get 350 miles to a tank of 95 RON - ok so I might get an extra few miles with 97 RON - but the extra cost of the fuel will actually make me worse off, even with those extra few miles!

As for your comments on the psychological effect s0cks - I am a psychology student, so I guess it makes sense that I look at it that way! :D

I too get well over 350 miles to the tankfull but my point was that in this particular filling station the 97 RON and the 95 RON were the same price so I treat my "Non-Performance" Yaris to some 97 RON at no more cost

It has to make sense (Any improved MPG will be a bonus) :)

I agree with Em about the 1.3 not being a performance car...

You'll have to come for a spin in mine... thats a 1.3 performance car! Granted it's not setting the tarmac alight, but it's !Removed! quick for a 1.3!!!

In my opinion, after running on optimax for about 4 months, it DOES make a difference. The car defiantley runs smoother and is more eager to rev (more responsive) And this isn't psychological bo**ocks, it really does make a difference. Also, at my Shell garage, it's only 2p per litre more than 95ron, and for the extra mileage i get and the added cleanliness it gives my engine... why the hell not??

Also, if it made no difference, then why does Kimi have to use it?? If it made no difference then she wouldn't need to use it. It's cleaner, more efficient and after a few fill ups... it does work. Just got to give it time!

Cus the charger needs more octane in the fuel. The standard engine/ecu is designed for 95ron. Granted there will be an increase in performance if you use higher ron (i think the yaris ecu learns when the fuel is higher ron) but it'd be so minute. I bet if you had a clone of your car running on 95 it'd do a 1/4mile in exactly the same time :)

You've been brain washed!

It may be a nippy 1.3 - and it is - I should know - I've had two!

But IMO a 1.3 would never be classed as a "performance car" When I say performance, I'm talking 2.0 litre upwards type performance cars!

No offence intended of course Seveer - you know I love your SR!

Theres no such thing as psychological bo**ocks either - dont diss the trade mate!
