Elderly Corolla Servicing Advice Reqd

Hi there - I have just bought a 1.6 auto 1992 Corolla (the old style one with the boot spoiler built in (like it needs the downforce) and the Toyota Corolla lettering on the back). It's done 62000 and I think could do with a decent service. Can anyone recommend someone near Surbiton / Kingston or Slough (where I work) and who isn't (1) gonna cost me zillions as they are a main dealer on massive hourly rates and full mark up on parts and (2) are a small specialist garage / individual who can be trusted to do the job properly with charging a fortune?

The car seems fine but the full service history receipts I have stop at about 37000 so I do think as service is due! (It has had sporadic work done since - brakes / spark plus / oil changes since then + did have a cambelt change at 26K for some reason - a bit early that! ) ........ Thanks

PS It also seems to have been resprayed too - er why on earth would someone want to do that I wonder. Hmm. But the car drives very smooth apart from transmisson being a teeny weeny bit jerky in forward gears.

(Don't like the 6000 mile service intervals - is now 20K I think on modern Toyotas - still I dont suppose people go to a garage every 6000 miles do they ? It would cost b. fortune during life of the car) peter@it-123.co.uk

Hi there and welcome

1992...that would be the AE 92 'range' built from 1987 to 1992 (E reg to k reg). If so look out for rust/ corrosion on all four wheel arches, back off sills & front of wings by sidelght.

Sorry can't help you with garage in that neck of woods.

Service intervals on all modern cars are way too long for my liking an oil change should be done long before 6000 mile.

My more modern Corolla (of the two) claims in the service book that an oil change of 9000 mile/once a year is fine however I still prefer to change oil at least 4000 mile (or twice a year which ever is sooner). Better if intending to keep long term.
