Hi, did a head gasket myself last August and I just used the old head bolts and it worked fine.

However, I am a complete novice when it comes to car maintenence and have been told I should have used new ones.

As for the torque settings, a mechanic at RMB Toyota said to torque to 80 Nm

in 4 passes.

Hope this helps.

I have heard mixed opinions on reusing the head bolts... I personally don't, but a good friend of mine that lives and breathes everything mkiii does.. he built my current grey car (one of 3 mk3s lol) and *touch wood* all seems fine so far!!!

I personally would go for 74 ftlb, in stages.. tighten to 50, leave it a couple of hours, then 60, leave it, then 74. (as the HG compresses it deforms slightly, let it settle and do it in stages to make sure everything is ok)

After about a thousand easy miles whip the cam covers up and re torque them all to 74 again..

While the cam covers are off buy new seals, as they tend to leak otherwise!

thanks for the info im waiting for my head to come back as im having it pressure tested as i could not see anything wrong with the head gasket it self, but i was getting water into the back two cylinders thought best to get it checked

cheers for the info ,when you said to check and re torque them after a thousand miles do i back the head bolts off or just check they are still at 74ftlb also how often should you check the head bolts.

Do not back off!!!!!!

just have the wrench at the correct rating and try and tighten them... see if any of them move (out of all of mine one did a tiny bit)...

Once you have done that you should not need to do it again (it gets to a point with a "settled" HG, re touquing can disturb it)

5 and 6 again... they seem to be the usual suspects! right by the EGR

I'd reccomend you remove that while its all in bits!!!! (Arnout at supras.nl does blanking plates)
