Exhaust And Air Filter

Hi All, Regretably I had a standard new front and mid section exhaust fitted to my car about a year ago, so when the silencer came up for renewal I thoght I would have a custom one made. It had to be fabricated by a company called longlife, and I am not overly impressed by it either. It's a three inch job, but the problem is I did not realise that there was also a silencer in the front section which seems to be holding the power back. I was thinking of chopping off the front box, but would this make the car too noisy for normal driving and not really benefit the performance? The kid who fitted the exhaust, did not recommend it, however, when I changed the back box on my Peugeot 306 I once had, it went like a rocket, and it only had 89BHP as standard!

On a related note, I have K&N filter from the same Peugeot 306 XS. I don't suppose there is any reason why this cannot be fitted subject to me matching the hose size etc. I am just concerned about the sensor on the air box. Could I just drill a hole and mount it in the side of the K&N?

Any advice on the above would be appreciated, as I think it would be nice to use some of the kit I already have.

thanks for your help in advance. :)

there are Two sensors, the air temp sensor (black) needs to sit inside the cone, drill a smaller hole than required and squeeze it in, the Vacuum sensor (blue) can sit outside, just cable tie it to something solid, make sure you keep the vacuum lines connected from the inlet manifold or it'll have nothing to 'sense'.

Some people say 'dont worry about them' but you only have 7 sensors in total and they all work together.

Unity Jon - thanks for your reply.

From memory you are right, there is the pull out black sensor which goes into the box and fits snuggly into a hole in the air box toward the windscreen end. There is a rubber ring on the box that the sensor squeezes into, so sure I can mount it, but from memory, the cone is that red paper stuff, I'll have a look at it tonight, however, it may have a rubber attachment into which I could mount the sensor.

The second sensor I am aware of is on the box and square in shape, I think it is blue and faces out towards the front of the car, it's a series of connectors enclosed I believe. I think you are therefore saying that this does not need to be connected to anthing?

I think the vacuum line is the black pipe from airbox to the throttle, which if removed affects the revs. I am not sure how I am supposed to leave this connected if I have removed the air box though.?

It's this vacuum sensor K&N had trouble with and as a result re-called (or stopped production) of the kits for the late spec engines.

If you are going to do what unity said, be sure to get a small universal filter for the vacuum hose and keep in a cool dry area of the engine bay - you really don't want moisture, dust or dirt getting into the inlet manifold

I wasn't going to take the chance with a K&N on my GTi so just put the stock box back in place.

As soon as the original air box is removed, the idle speed alters itself. There is an adjustment under a rubber cap near the throttle body. Once engine is warm turn the adjustment screw so that the engine is idling at around 750rpm and you should be fine.

My school of thought is that, as I have the K&N, having removed it from a previous car that I bought it for and as it is sitting idle, I may as well attempt to use it. I notice it does actually have two pre drilled holes in the rubber, so the main sensor should fit in it. I am wondering whether a place like Halfords will do a small filter for the vacuum though, as the larger filters are usually mail order, or at least my one was.

I will have a play around over the weekend, as if it needs too much modification, It may prove impossible or unreliable to fit. I think the airbox has been drilled out anyway, so I could just go with a replacement filter for the airbox at a later date.
