Carina - Grumbles When Moving Off

Hi, someone at work has just bought a P reg Carina E (I think it's the 4AFE) with about 140k on the clock. The car is in really good condition and the engine sounds excellent on idle. The only problem he has is when setting off sometimes (eg. when going uphill or needing more revs than normal) - there's a momentary squeaking/rattling noise, it sounds like something is straining or the car is grumbling about having to move. I wondered if it might be a problem with the clutch but there's no sign of slipping or anything. Could it be something exhaust related?

Mine has done this since I bought it two years ago - if you search the forum you'll see that it's a common noise.

there's no need to worry at all.

If it's the water pump going check your radiator level and keep an eye on the temperature gauge (had fun over Christmas with this). Keep a few litres of water/antifreeze mix in the (cavernous) boot just in case.

Oh, don't let it boil up!

if water ok, it could be the clutch release bearing. Nothing major, but annoying and the g/box needs removal to correct. Would sound like a small whine at the point the clutch is released and once the clutch bites it would be gone.
