Need An Ignitor Urgently

Hi,

I need to find an ignitor for my 87 celica GT (3s-ge engine) asap. The garage have tried a new ECU, and coil, with no success, and think that the only thing left to try changing is the ignitor (which they SAY they have tested with some sort of diagnostic device, and it was ok - but there apparently is nothing else to try).

Toyota charge about £240 for it... I really need to find one cheaper, since that is 2/3 of the price of the car anyway... can anyone point me to any specific places to find this part? I have already put in a request on 1st choice parts website, which checks some local breakers.

Also - is the "ignitor" an "ignition module", or an "ignition amplifier" ? When I chose the part on the spares website, those 2 were the closest names to "ignitor" I could find.

Thanks,

Daniel.

Yep, ignitor, ignition amplifier, ignition module all refer to the same component.

It would be best to find someone local to yourself with a running car to 'borrow' an ignitor from to try it out. Getting one from a breakers could be a bit of an unknown.

Anyone on here live near Daniel (who has a gen4 celica, obviously)? Also possible a gen 5 one might be the same (not sure though).

Just another thought, it could be the position sensor in the distributor gone faulty. I don't think it is though, due to your coil failing, and you would probably get a fault code from the ECU if it was a failed sensor.

OK, this is the igniter on the gen5 (found on the bulkhead near the coil):

If your's looks like that, then maybe you could try/buy one off a gen 5.

Hi,

Thanks for that :) It looks the same, but from what I can see it has a different part number.. so maybe something slightly different with voltage or something?

I managed to get one from the same breaker that quoted me on an ECU (since before, the garage thought it might be the ECU) I got it for £25, obviously no guarantee that it works, but, I'm assuming that most cars there are taken there cos they're in a crash, and electrical parts right at the back of the engine area are least likely to be damaged, wouldnt you say?

The one i bought has the right part number, based on the part number the garage read to me from the one in the car now.

If this doesnt work, I don't know what to do.. the car cost £350, I've already spent £140 on it for the new coil and labour for that, plus £40 for the electrician labour, plus £25 for this ignitor, plus labour time to work on that monday....I don't know if it's REALLY this difficult, or if this garage is just being a bit crap...

The problem is I can hardly say "right, I'm taking my car now" ... because it doesnt start ... heh

The garage is all credited by big companies like green flag, admiral, elephant etc. so I dont see how they can be that bad, otherwise more people would have complained to their recovery company... I dunno, I just hope this works, not having a car for over a week now, is starting to get annoying - I hate public transport lol

Thanks for your help, I'll update on what happens monday.

Actually, having looked properly at my part, the box is the same, but it has a different plug, much smaller one with 6 connectors in 2 rows of 3, so I guess a gen5 wont work.
